I certainly don't wish to suggest it is the norm for everyone but I think I was using GAS as a substitute for other things lacking in my life. It was only when my marriage started to fail that I suddenly started buying loads of basses. At the time I didn't see what I was doing. I was always upfront about what I was buying but it got silly and I could rotate instruments at one a month with a stock at home of over 20. When my marriage finally ended a few years later I sold stuff off and felt better.

I've used the same bass since for every gig and haven't bought anything new for over a couple of years. I feel like I've done the whole owning loads of gear thing now and the bass I use is perfectly fine. Whilst I say it may not be the norm I bet there are a few on here who subconsiously are doing what I used to do even if their circumstances are slightly different. I'd rather live my life then collect stuff that I don't have time to play all at once. GAS *can* be a really dangerous thing. I'm sure my girlfriend now would let me buy whatever I want but I don't need anything

I agree with BurritoBass. GAS can be fun and beats spending the cash at the bookies, but it can be a substitute for several things including gigging and working at technique.

I really lost my GAS when I got an upright bass, cos nothing I can buy is going to make me a better player. Ironically, my other half would be OK with any buying spree I wanted.

But there's no point :(
