What 2x10 combo would you choose?

I was having a look on the interwebs to try and buy my first decent bass amp

I saw this trace Elliot http://www.traceelliot.com/bassamps/?item=116932 which I looked up after seeing how popular they were on ebay

I sorta figured a 2x10 wouldn't be too expensive to start with

But i was startled to find it costs £1500

I was only looking at spending £400 max

I really have no idea where to start. What would you guys get with that sort of money?

cheers

Check out the for sale section here on BC. Plenty of 2x10 combos under you price range. Going down the second hand route gives you a lot of bang for your bucks. Plus you can move it on again without loosing too much dosh.

Something like this would do you.

Don't buy the Hartke Hydrive 2x10 as i hear it tends to suffer from 'farting speaker syndrome' when you turn it up loud.

This one http://www.samsontech.com/hartke/products/combos/hydrive-combos/hydrive210c/

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll have a look through the for-sale section on BC

just found this on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Trace-Elliot-Bass-Combo-Amp-7210H-Serviced-Sep-2012-300w-/190748396492?pt=UK_MusicalInstr_Amplifiers_RL&hash=item2c697d8bcc&_uhb=1

Any good? I like the style of the Trace Elliots and the frequency response sliders for boosting certain things.

Why would you do that over a 2x10?
Not being confrontational or anything i just don't know :D
easy. I like 12ers better than 10ers and a 12" cab or combo is usually much lighter. :)

I heard 15s are more punchy too!

It depends on what it is (how well it's been designed, etc). My 2x10 has a lot more bass than the 2x15 I had before.
A 1x12 combo with a 1x12 cab under it can be a very good rig. Especially if you're playing in tight spaces.

do they sound better to you? i've read that 10s are more punchy
well, if I like them better, it's obvious, isn't it?
but as everything it depends on the chain and what you want to hear.

Is your 2x10 the Markbass CMD102P? or something different?

I chose the Markbass after spending many months trying countless rigs from Ashdown, SWR, Ampeg, Trace Elliot, GK, Eden, Phil Jones, Euphonic Audio & a few others.
A lot of them make good rigs & it's down to what You like the sound of. I like the MB as it handles whatever I want from it & it's probably the loudest combo I've ever used.

Try as many as you can & get an idea of what you like. The good thing about buying s/h is that if you don't like it, you can pass it on with a minimal loss of £s (if any). I bought new as it had to go past the Mrs & she wouldn't approve of s/h at the time (she does now though).

Unfortunately that's only the cab! Personally I reckon you'd get more options if you were to look at getting a head cab.

For example, you could pick up that Trace cab for £170 (without haggling) and I'm pretty sure theres a flightcased Hartke LH350 for sale on here somewhere too for like £120 or so.

That is a killer rig right there. Might be a little heavy, but it'll sound awesome and if you want to you can swap out the head or the cab in the future. Hartke cabs are pretty good value for money too, especially the VX range. Big and heavy, but bags of punch.

Truckstop

If you can stretch your budget by @ £200ish, you'll be hard pushed to get anything better than a 2nd hand Markbass CMD102P. They come up on here from time to time for @ £600 & it'd blow that TE back into the 80s. :)

+1. Or a Markbass CMD121. I use the mini version of that amp, it`s light enough to carry with one hand, and have just got home from a gig where I used it with no FOH, just the amp. Plenty of power, and we`re an 8-piece band, playing punk-type music.

If you can find a Redhead for that price, that is an awful lot of amp for your money, IMO.

Don't think an Ashdown or TE would compete myself, but if you like the sounds, then ok.
Markbass 102 combos are a modern take on the
Redhead but not £200 better on SH prices..IMO
