I have a Mexican P bass in mint condition which I'm pleased with apart from the pickup. So my question is: Out of all the aftermarket stuff that there is around, which would give me the nearest sound/power or better than a USA Precision?

I have an old Korean Squier with a lovely neck and a nice sunburst body. I put in a Seymour Duncan SPB1 pickup and it sounds great!
People often comment on the sound of the bass after gigs.

Hah, I forgot about the SPB1, cheers for that I've heard others comment on how good they are.

Will this work ok without a preamp on a standard bass?

I have a Seymour Duncan SPB2, gritty and clanky. And a Wizard Thumper, dark and heavy, that I use in the reggae band. Best comment I got after a gig (from a horn player) was -what do I tune down to? -EADG, mate. -No really! it's so deeeep!

Yes, most definitely.

If you want some serious growl ( that word again) with a bit of "hair" on the note, the best I have ever heard is the Hanson/ Lakland Neo Punch pickup. It differs from most others in that it uses neodynium magnets , and it has a unique ( and massive) sound as a result. High output and thrilling sound. The previously-mentioned Seymour Duncan SB1 is also a fantastic sounding pickup.

Strings Direct are where mine are coming from. :)

Just curious, how did you localize your sound problem to the pickups, and what about the pickups sounds bad? The distance from the pickup to the string greatly affects the tone. Not saying you haven't, but you can experiment with that a good bit and see what range of tones you already have at your disposal.

Ok thanks guys, SPB-1 sounds just what I want, I don't think I could afford the Fralins :(

I've said it before, and I'll say it again! If economy is a major factor, I don't think you can go far wrong with these:

On my custom built P-bass I installed Wilkinson WBP pick-ups. They are amazing and incredibly good value too. I was so impressed I only use Wilkinson hardware on my custom builds now.

My 91 MIM Precision sound good with the original pickup, nice deep growl. Have they changed them since the early Mexican fenders, or was i just lucky ?

I much prfer the sound of it to that of my 2011 USA Precision, but that might be down to the bloody orrible greasebucket tone circuit, which will be leaving sometime soon.

True dat. I've had their P and J pups and they've always been brilliant. Be warned though, the Overwound ones are ridiculously loud!

Well, I have an SPB-1 coming courtesy of Lozz and a loom courtesy of John (Kiogon) so we' ll get it installed and I'll report back.

What is a greasebucket tone thing?
I love to hear what gear works for everyone too, some good ideas here.

Thanks again all.
