Which Fender Custom Shop Bass if Money Wasn't a Factor?

Either a LPB '69 jazz with matching headstock, ala Herbie Flowers as mentioned earlier, but not 'reliced' (I hate the way that word looks!) or RickFine's '57/58 P bass (which I thought was pretty damned amazing) with the raised A pole piece and no 'Custom Shop' logo on the back of the headstock. Te 'Custom Shop' logo is just a no-go for me, not that I have 2 or 3k to spend ona bass, but if I did then I'd certainly not want that on it. :)

Probably either a P/J on a P body or just a P, Olympic or yellowing White, NOT AGED, vintage tint neck, dark rosewood board, light as they can make it, the modern AS bridge, and a thicker poly than they currently use (probably not nitro for me). 62 reissue pup for the P.

Nothing out of the ordinary really. I'd expect the quality to be SUPERB though.

I already have a Fender CS, it's a Reggie Hamilton 5 string. Probably on the chopping block now though as I am firmly in the 4 string camp. I guess I'd like the same as a 4 string but relic'd and NOT sunburst!
Is the Reggie classed as a Custom Shop?

I thought it was an 'Artist' series but wasn't sure if it carried the CS logo as well?

I'd seen the Pino, Jaco & Dusty Artist models so maybe Reggie is in there as well :)

N.B. I did try to check but the CS web site was down when I looked earlier :(

The RH 5-string is CS.

Ah ha - the site is working again now!

Looks like the 4 is CS too :)

That's the 4th of the Artist CS models with Pino, Jaco & Dusty

I know someone who just ordered (last week in fact) their own Custom Shop Jazz bass from Fender, their own specs, total cost £2100 to your door, not masterbuilt, but still a CS certified build, I think thats pretty good, and you don't pay all until its delivered, they do a payment increment scheme, where the final installment is made prior to collection, all through UK dealer too.

I hadn't seen full prices anywhere but I see they are on the quote sheet.

I've looked at the catalogue a few times but only saw recommended full retail prices for finished basses & not options.

Those masterbuilt fees are really high - there's an extra $1,000 to specifically choose your builder as well.

Mind you - I guess I did start this off by saying 'if money were no option' so i can only blame myself!

Wow - I'm really getting into this now, lol.

Has anyone watched the videos on the CS site?

http://www.fendercustomshop.com/index.php/master-built/#

I found the two on body wood & neck wood really interesting. They are, unsurprisingly, totally about Strat & Tele shapes but I like the way the guy in the vids stresses some stuff about there not being a 'better' wood but just that it will sound 'different'. Even the same woods can sound quite different dependent on weight etc.

Worth 10 minutes of your time if you're interested in this sort of stuff :)

As I already have the only P bass I want, I would go for a 1962 reissue Jazz in sunburst with proper clay dots in a very dark rosewood board and insist on the CS finding real celluloid for the tort scratchplate. Nothing too outlandish, just a quality copy of the classic 62 Jazz, lightly relic'd so I didn't worry about treating it with kid gloves.

Actually I would rather - for the same money - own an early 70s Jazz in the same livery (obviously without clay dots and blocks instead), such as wateroftyne's lovely example that was briefly FS on the forum

Can someone clarify exactly what you get with a Fender CS instrument. Is it a combination of standard Fender features to your spec that doesn't exist in any of the current production models or is there something more?

As I understand it, it's simply a Fender that has been "made properly". :yarr:

Having thought about it, if money was no object, mine would be...

Precision
Sand blasted swamp ash body, black oil finish
b/w/b pickguard
bolt on satin maple neck with glossy maple fretboard
modern C shape, 9.5" radius
fretted
side dots only
hi mass bridge (like the USA standard)
hipshot ultralight tuners
brass nut, 42mm nut width
SPB-2 pickup
passive
knurled chrome knobs

Errr, I can't think of anything else.

EDIT: and this
Oh, and can you make sure it weighs less than 9 pounds and has got a nice tight neck pocket . And no annoying fretbuzz . And that the trussrod works properly .

To go with my fantasy Jazz Bass I ordered yesterday , I will also have a Precision Bass in Fiesta Red ( not the faded to pink version either , proper Fiesta Red ) with a Brazilian rosewood board ( I used to have a girlfriend with a Brazilian and she was pretty tasty so I expect it would work well on a bass ) , 60s logo , Badass bridge , 60s Vintage pickup and a white scratchplate . Oh, and can you make sure it weighs less than 9 pounds and has got a nice tight neck pocket . And no annoying fretbuzz . And that the trussrod works properly .
