New Bassist seeks answer to simple question

Greetings,

I have always wanted to learn the bass, and finally went out and bought a starter piece. Here's my kicker...I don't wanna buy an amp yet, as I have rent due, and don´t plan on gigging anytime soon.

I want to use my headphones for practice sessions, but have been told that, regardless of plug size on my cans, I will not be able to use them sans-amp.

Can anybody recommend a good cheap pedal that has an output on it, or any other remedy, because I find it silly to spend 80 to 100 dollars just to be able to use my headphones.

I thank any and everyone in advance, for any wisdom they can impart. When I get famous, said helper will get a bi-line in my first liner notes.

Cheers,

Diego from Buenos Aires

I don't know if either of these are appropriate, but might be food for though!

I use a StealthPlug for when I'm practising away from home, plugs into your laptop via USB. The software has loads of different amp combinations on it and you can also load MP3's into it to jam along too. http://www.stealthplug.com/

It might seem silly to spend the money but its a very good practice aid as it has rhythm patterns, a tuner and effects etc so it will be much more than a short cut to just hearing your bass.
A second hand Zoom 708 would give you all of that, but in a larger footpedal style, and it would be cheaper.

Another alternative would be the Pocket Rock-it headphone amplifier - built into a box on the end of the jack-plug.

Buy a £40 four channel mixer like this one and plug your bass and cans (headphones) into that. You can also plug your PC/iPod in at the same time and jam along.

this is exactly what i'm thinking of at the moment - i'm tired of having to fire up my music pc if i just want to jam along to some recordings or just noodle on the bass.

i was considering something like this

but for a tenner extra you can get a cheap mxer...which has got to be more useful
