jim_strings Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Hi all, Just a quick question to try and get a rough idea of what bass strings are most popular. I run a business selling strings and accessories. We currently only stock D'Addario, Elites and Ernie Ball bass. While these are popular with our customers what other brands are popular? Not being a bass player I would welcome any thoughts you had. I appreciate this is a fairly vague question , just trying to get a general overview of what people are using. Cheers! Quote
BassBunny Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 SIT and Dean Markley Rocco Prestia for me. Quote
Lozz196 Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Rotosound Steel Roundwounds - heavy gauge. Many places stock regs, but not many have the heavies. Quote
stinson Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Elites at the moment, Dunlops before that Quote
bassmanady Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 I have been trying many different makes and gauges, for several months, and found the new Elixir Nanoweb 45-100 to be my favourite Quote
krysh Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 right now on my 4 basses there are thomastik jazz flats, dr neon 45-125, newsound 40-100 and r.cocco steels 40-100. i like them all so far. Quote

chrismuzz Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 D'Addario Prosteels! My previous favourites were Elites Stadium Series, and Ernie Ball slinkies. You can't go wrong with those three! Rotosounds are pretty damn popular too. Quote
Hobbayne Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Ernie Ball Super Slinkies 45 to 100 Gauge Quote

gazhowe Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Status hotwires (double ball) for my headless S2 and Elixir for everything else. Gauges are 40-100 and 45-100 I believe. Quote

shizznit Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 I recently switched to the new Elixir Stainless .45-130. I used the Elixir nickel strings for about 6yrs before then. I have also used D'Addario Pro Steels and DR Hi-Beams. All very good strings. Quote
Mudpup Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Guess thats narrowed it down a bit then Quote

How would you compare the Elixir Stainless to D'Addario Prosteels when it comes to initial brightness? Quote
I think the D'Addario Pro Steels are actually a tad bit brighter than the Elixir Stainless strings. I haven't used a set of Pro Steels for quite some time, so my memory might be a bit foggy. You naturally do get a little bit less of string squeak with the Elixirs because of the coating. That could possibly be the reason why they don't sound as hyperactive as the Pro Steels. Little things like that make a difference. The Elixirs are very good strings and do give you that 'hi-fi' tone if thats what floats your boat, but I prefer them to other stainless string brands because they seem to have a mellower mid-range response.
