Blink
Hi All How many of you playing in a band have public liability insurance? I play in a 7 piece function band and I am covered through my MU policy but the rest of the band are not? I am questioning whether to renew my MU subscription (£177) because I feel I get no value from it as I am not a professional musician and don't use any of the other services offered by the MU. My Powerplay (Allianz) broker has quoted £180 to cover the whole band for a year but I have no idea if this is a good deal. Does anyone have knowledge or expertise in this are that they would be willing to share. Ta muchly N
sirenboy
I am an insurance broker (as well as a bass player!) and the £180 you have been quoted by Allianz sounds like a very good deal for a 7 piece band. Note that these policies may have exclusions such as no pyrotechnics (which may include smoke machines) so this might be an issue for you. Presumably the £177 MU subscription includes other services - if it's just for public liability insurance it's very expensive. Hope this helps. hamfist
My 5 piece function band is insured. The money sounds about right, from memory.
xgsjx
I've got PLI through New Moon. They cover my bass & I get it with it. £25 p/a.
Barefootbassplayer
I'm covered through the MU, have occassionally used some of their other services such as Contract advice so have been happy to carry on paying knowing they are there if I need them
flyfisher
Has anyone with insurance ever had to make a claim? I'd be interested to hear the details of the incident. Also, has anyone without insurance ever had to an incident that they had to pay out of their own pockets?
BassBunny
We use Rees Astley who are specialist is Performing Arts Insurance. http://www.insurance4performingarts.co.uk/ Great to deal with and I think we were quoted £75 for £2M cover for a 5 piece band. brensabre79
I insure my gear with Musicguard, which comes with PL Insurance too. Not sure how good they are as I've never had to claim (touch wood)

My quote with New Moon was twice as much but the PLI doesn't cover the band, Music Guard does, in fact, what ever musicians are on stage with you are covered. Of course if anything goes wrong the claim will have to go through the policy holder. Dan

pietruszka
Ah yes! Got things mixed up, Mew Moon was half the cost but the only person covered for PLI was myself, otherwise it worked out to be the same. Dan
4 Strings
No-one made a claim then? Anyone? The question has arisen in our band too. I count it as a high consequence but low risk. Similarly with the gear insurance, we were encouraged to insure our pa, but the £250 excess meant that is was providing virtually no insurance at all for £150. Blink
Thanks for the responses. The MU Subs cover the full range of MU services but because I'm not a professional I have no need for the other services so the whole sub becomes just for the PL insurance. I will do more research.
