I Got You is structurally a 12 bar blues and apparently the funk style was still in development at that time. Cold Sweat shunned traditional chord changes apart from the bridge section and was a "watershed" moment in the movement. Some say I Got You and others say Cold Sweat. I heard it was Cold Sweat from a James Brown documentary. Either way I'm just glad it happened. Quote
Terry M. Posted yesterday at 11:34 Posted yesterday at 11:34 I would lean more towards Cold Sweat based on the single chord vamp structure (bridge aside) Quote
fleabag Posted yesterday at 18:17 Posted yesterday at 18:17 Shockeroo, i was in a 7 piece " funk " outfit about 4 years ago, and it was probably the best time ive had in any band. And yes, we covered James Brown's ' Get Up ' Quote

fleabag Posted yesterday at 18:41 Posted yesterday at 18:41 Well, the whole song title is Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine. To be accurate. But who the funk wants to type that out er....oops 1 Quote

fleabag Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago Yeah good point. But, you're right, Sex Machine was probably the better title, so as to differentiate between the 2. Ive reported myself to the song title misuse board 1 Quote

I saw a Pee Wee Ellis interview and he called out So What as an inspiration (the horn line) but I think the modal jazz influence is there as well in terms of staying on a single chord for longer. That would make sense seeing as Pee Wee had a jazz background. A few of his musicians weren't impressed at the time with the "correctness" of the structure but we all saw what followed shortly after 😊 I've also heard him cite the So What reference 👍 1 Quote
