ULTRA BLACKS A black nylon flatwound string with a bit more tension than the rockabillys. A real dark horse this one, has a lovely punch to the pizz and a good amount of growl and sustain; it also bows surprisingly well, though with a definite "reediness" to the sound. ORDER ( * = done)) Sarah Thomas * Rudders * Jwbassman * ChrisF * Ubassman * Maude * Johnny dissident * PURPOLARIS * Burg * Steve * TheRev * Trashabilly Invicta59 TheRev (again! ) Edited July 5, 2014 by daflewis
sarah thomas Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 Hi Daf I'd love to try the ultra blacks please.
daflewis Posted November 24, 2012 Author Posted November 24, 2012 Certainly! I'm just sorry it took so long to get them on here!
sarah thomas Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 The strings arrived today - hooray! But alas, my bass is still with the luthier, who has had the flu. He said it would be ready by the end of the week, but didn't say which week ...
Rudders Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 HI, I have been using La Bella 7710's for some years now but I would certainly be interested to try these.
daflewis Posted December 26, 2012 Author Posted December 26, 2012 Hi Rudders, Certainly! you're on the list. I know Sarah's had a bit of a wait for her bass, but I think it's arrived now, so give her a couple of weeks and I'm sure she'll be in touch... Cheers, Daf
sarah thomas Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 The strings have gone on Geraldine today and first impressions are pretty damn fine. They have a smooth feel with no stickiness - like silk under the fingers. The tension seems somewhere between Innovation Honeys and Spirocore mediums. They bow better than the Honeys but not quite as well as the Spirocores. And they look really cool. Black strings. Yeah.
daflewis Posted December 27, 2012 Author Posted December 27, 2012 Bow better than the honeys - Wow! Never would have expected that... Glad you're enjoying them.
jwbassman Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Hi guys, I'm trying the Honey's at the moment but would love to give these a try too, please add me to the list. Many thanks
daflewis Posted December 29, 2012 Author Posted December 29, 2012 Hi John, Will do! - actually on a related note, tiki's after you with the honeys, but he's in Belgium.... If the postage is a but steep please just send them to me and I'll post them on. Cheers, Daf
sarah thomas Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Seeing as I like these so much and seeing as my G string unravelled magnificently when I took it off, I've just ordered a set of these strings from stringexpress. When they arrive and I swap the strings over, I'll forward them onto Rudders.
ChrisF Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Think I'd like to give these a go too Daf ....cheers........
daflewis Posted February 10, 2013 Author Posted February 10, 2013 (edited) Hi Chris, Done! Actually, does anyone know where these are at the moment? Edited February 10, 2013 by daflewis
sarah thomas Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I posted them on to Gary (Rudders) last month. He said he had received them (11th Jan) but had the flu so hadn't tried them out. As far as I know, that's where they are.
ubassman Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Hi Daf, Would be interested in trying these out ....could I go on the list?
daflewis Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 Thanks sarah, will check with Rudders... Ubassman, you're on! Daf
adam2180 Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Would the tone be similer to the Rock a Billies? With more tension would I get a little more volume on my ply DB?
daflewis Posted February 19, 2013 Author Posted February 19, 2013 Hi Adam, You should get a bit more volume from them, but the main thing you'll notice will probably be a fatter tone. Cheers, Daf
daflewis Posted February 21, 2013 Author Posted February 21, 2013 Does anyone know Rudders? I sent him a PM about the test set which he has, but he's not replied (or read it) - I'm a little concerned as this could the the second set to go missing in as many weeks... Any help would be appreciated! Ta.
ChrisF Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Got the strings in the post this morning.....thought I would let everyone know where they were. ( and help Daf keep track too Chris
daflewis Posted May 18, 2013 Author Posted May 18, 2013 Hi Chris, Thanks for that - it certainly does help! Hope you're doing ok... Daf
ChrisF Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 (edited) Thanks Daf, Im getting their slowly. But more importantly...the Ultras are amazing. Lovely deep sound. Cant wait until the rest of the band hears them on Wednesday. Think I feel a purchase coming on lol just one thing....the ends could do with being coloured like the other strings....its really hard putting black strings on a black bass. Edited May 18, 2013 by ChrisF
daflewis Posted May 18, 2013 Author Posted May 18, 2013 Hi Chris, Glad you're on the mend - and glad you like the strings! I'm just sorry they took so long to get round to you...
daflewis Posted May 18, 2013 Author Posted May 18, 2013 Oh, as for the ends - yeh, it's funny, people seem divided on the colour issue.... I think the original reason was the whole "ultra black" thang.. But, in fact the silk colour of the braid orchestral string was changed to black because people thought the mauve ends clashed with their basses!
