Silvia Bluejay
Congrats Paul, and thank you so very much to all of you for taking part. I will repeat myself - all the tracks were outstanding. Keep up the good work!
Skol303
^ Thanks everyone! I love this community :-) I'll definitely be setting up a build diary on BC for the bass. Would welcome your input in that. I'm thinking I might opt for a body shaped like Jimmy Savile's face, with the neck forming a big cigar...thoughts?? ;-) Right. I'm off to drink a strong one. Muchas gracias amigos!

steve
congratulations Skol, it was a bit of a roller-coaster ride, but I'm glad the anticipated result before the poll meltdown was repeated. Enjoy your custom bass (and the design and build process) Looking forward to an equally inspiring picture for next month.

lowdown
Where did you get the bargain on Miroslav software, Walman? I have looked at that before. I currently use a really old version of Edirol (I think? It was written before Bach died) and it is ok but I know the Miroslav stuff is better. I am also thinking of working on full orhestral composing in future but it is hard, not only because of the complexity of the arranging but because getting the software to work is a nightmare.
If you are on a budget - The Garritan Orchestral library is well worth a punt [$149.99] Plenty of articulations, correct panning placement of the Instruments, and some Instrument divi combinations. It's all in one 16 channel multi timbral VSTi, so you can use as many instances as your computer can handle. Quite a lot of the Orchestral training collages use this. Here you go, price, info and demo's. http://www.garritan....d=154&Itemid=54 Instrument list. http://www.garritan....=125&Itemid=138 They also have the free Korsakov on line training, well worth looking at. http://www.garritan....apper&Itemid=34 A very, very useful forum. http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/forumdisplay.php/39-Garritan-Libraries Their own free Video training on the software. http://www.garritan.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=159&Itemid=120 In short - just about everything you will need for Midi Orchestral writing. And software with incredible support. Garry Edited December 1, 2012 by lowdown
Skol303
Just PM'd Charic with a pic for this month. I'm sure he'll be on the case once he's finished drinking his way through last night's rider and turfing out the groupies from his tour bus… (Hope it went well Rick!) PS...
...why doesn't Basschat create a downloadable album with all the tracks for each month of the composition competition? I for one would love to collect all the tracks from last month and this month (I wasn't aware of the competition before then) and the future ones, and happy to pay for them.
^ I really like this idea! Gets my support.
Bilbo
You all realise, of course, that, as a moderator, I decided early on that it was inappropriate for me to win so whenever anyone voted for me, I deleted the vote. I left a few in there because I didn't want to draw attention to my ploy. I actually got 207 votes but am sworn to secrecy..... I shall never tell. charic
Ill put up the new thread tonight. Currently too knackered lol. RockfordStone, your track was the best for me. It fit the pictures well to my imagination and was a great song in isolation too. Hence why it got my vote.

paul_5
Skol's was in my top 3, as were Lord Sausage's entry (fnar, fnar) and Silddx's piece because it reminded me so much of Zappa's music (and I mean that in a very positive way!). Well done to all involved.

dave_bass5
First time ive even noticed this sort of thing on BC. Some fantastic work from everyone, very impressive. I must admit i've not listened to them all, all the way through, some weren't my cup of tea, but one stood out for me, partly because i thought part of it sounded like It Bites, and partly because i just loved the idea and the music in general, so my vote went to Silddx. Oh,and thanks for the mention Nig, although it wasn't needed :-). Glad you are getting on well with it. I was going to PM you about that but i can see its working just fine. HAHA, that will teach me to read the thread first. So, my vote was too late. Sorry about that. Shame it actually let me vote though. That's really lovely to hear you liked it so much The Korg is brilliant, it's introduced me to a whole new inspiring world, so much so that my dear queen is buying me a Novation Impulse 49 for Christmas! I was going to PM you today saying that I can give the Korg back to you in Jan if that's convenient for you, along with a flagon of choice bourbon Thank you ever so much for lending it to me, it's been a total joy to have around and it's changed my music and composition for ever. Along with this competition it's really inspired me to make my own music again, and I'm sooooo happy about that! Thanks again, Dave, you're an absolute gem mate
dave_bass5
No problem Nig. As i said it was just hanging around. Glad you found such a good use for it. Funny enough both my sons are now getting in to playing keyboards. The youngest is getting a lovely workstation for Christmas. The keys light up so will be great for leaning songs. Its not midi or even USB but its going to be ideal for him (and yes, we got him some good headphones as well . The eldest loves Garageband on my iPad2 and has started to create some "music" on his PC with my Roland midi controller, but was wanting something bigger with more keys and sounds built in, so it will be handy to get the Korg back whenever you've finished with it. Definitely no rush though. The Novation looks great, i'd like something like that if i get back in to playing keys and recording. I hope it works out for you. When i was at the gadget show on Friday i almost got my son one of these, until i saw the price. OMG is the term that comes to mind. I was thinking its like Casio VL1 updated but oh no, much more than that. Very nice piece of kit though.
