Walker Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Hi there, I need to solder an XLR onto the end of a speaker cable with a 1/4" TS on the other end. The solder tips of XLR are marked 1, 2 and 3 - 1 is nine oclock, 3 is six oclock and 2 is 3 oclock (these are the solder tips, not the face that mates with the socket). Where do I solder the red and black cores of the speaker cable? Does anything need to be bridged the same as an XLR instrument cable? I've spent an hour looking for this info, but can't find anything conclusive! Cheers Chris Quote
paul_5 Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 http://www.mediacollege.com/audio/connection/xlr-jack-mono.html looks about right. Quote
Walker Posted December 1, 2012 Author Posted December 1, 2012 Thanks for that Paul 5. I used that for my instrument cables - so is it exactly the same for speaker cable? Quote
dincz Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 You really need to look at the cab's connections or check with a meter. Different cabs used different pins. Quote
Walker Posted December 1, 2012 Author Posted December 1, 2012 These are going from stage box (from aux's) to power yammy monitors. We've used double ended TR 1/4 cables up until now, so just need to get the female xlr's on! Quote
dincz Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Ah, so signal cables rather than speaker cables. 1 earth, 2 hot, 3 not should be fine. Quote
obbm Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Don't use speaker cable. You need either screened pair mic cable or single core screened instrument cable. Quote

What should i be using for daisy chaining between powered cabs then? Quote
BigRedX Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 If each cab has it's own amp then normal screened signal cable. BTW don't your powered cabs tell you what pin is what on the XLRs? Ours do. Quote
Walker Posted December 1, 2012 Author Posted December 1, 2012 Thanks for the help gents. Not sure what the cabs say - they are in our practice room. I'll double check next time. This is what I get for being the only band member who knows how to solder! Quote
paul_5 Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 generally pin 2 is hot (signal), so that'll go to the tip, but they tend to be printed on the kit these days, or try looking at an online manual - that sort of info is generally in the back pages. Quote
