paulconnolly
Hi Dave! ...let's not forget his nifty Basswork with the legend that is Bill Nelson.... http://bigplansforev...tures-from.html
+1 for this. The last few Nelsonicas have been great for watching Dave at work both with the Gentlemen Rocketeers and Orchestra Futura. Unfortunately I couldn't get to the Gong gig in Liverpool. Vigier Passion fretless Delta Metal for sale in Bass Direct if you've a spare £1500 http://www.bassdirec...sion_fless.html Oh and a really great guy to talk to Edited December 8, 2012 by paulconnolly
lojo
Here and Now supported Gong in Liverpool a few weeks ago, it was Enochian Theory in London (I really enjoyed them and bought the album). Keith Tha Bass is on Facebook and every morning he does a charming little reflection on the weather He's still playing with Here and Now.
Great ill check them out, always remember loving an album with him on it.
molan
Slightly off topic but I will never forget seeing Hillage at Reading festival. Sham 69 were on stage with Jimmy Pursey in his usual rabble rousing phase and getting various skins etc up on stage to join in on 'If the Kids are United'. Then, in the corner of the stage a mysterious long haired, mostly orange clad, figure hits the stage, plugs in his guitar and begins to solo over the top of the cacophony going on all around him. Skins look frightened and unable to make out what's happening and give him a wide berth - Hillage continues to solo away seeming quite happy and serene
bottomfeed
Another life long Gong fan here!... Mike Howlett has always been a big influence & inspiration... It was great to see him on the 2009 tour in Bristol with Hillage & Miquette too!... A fantastic gig! This is a great thread..... Very surprising & informative ...That's what I like about Basschat!... Great bass sound on the Hillage vid btw!... Edited December 9, 2012 by bottomfeed
davesturt
Hi Paul (Connolly) - thanks for the comment. I once played one of the very early Delta metal fretless Vigiers - and it was terrible! They hadn't sorted the neck very well - and I'm not sure if it was carbon fibre - anyway it's definitely worth playing before parting with money. Vigier stopped production of them a couple of years ago - I can't believe it! Mine is an exceptional bass - the action, sustain, sound (in all areas) are outstanding! I really should look after it with more care - it's looking a bit battered at the moment!
! This is a great thread..... Very surprising & informative ...That's what I like about Basschat!... Great bass sound on the Hillage vid btw!...
I wonder what's surprising?! I have been wondering for a while about passing on some 'bass themed' thoughts regarding Gong and SHB (and Bill Nelson) material but didn't know where to post where it would be appreciated - maybe this is the place! I've learned a hell of a lot since getting the Gong/SHB gig in 2009 - from learning the (surprisingly difficult) material - to learning to play the fretless with an intense and solid feel. Let me know if there's interest out there and maybe I'll start another thread.

Fortunately, Dave, I'm far enough from Bass Direct to make a casual trip to try a bass out prohibitive. It's saved me a fortune . Hopefully see you at Nelsonica 13?

(I always seemed to be the 'fringe dweller' with my musical likes, in my youth...but I obviously wasn't alone!)...during which, a current Gong bass player pops up to share his experience..... appreciated! .....a guitarist friend of mine visits Basschat because he finds it much more interesting & 'genuine' than many of the guitar forums... which he feels are predominantly populated by pubescent egos trying to out shred each other!.... Bring on the bass themed thoughts! ... This is exactly the place for them! Edited December 10, 2012 by bottomfeed

Will need an expression pedal too. So any progress on your bass thoughts regarding Gong and Hillage? I and others will be fascinated to read them! White Cloud
Really like Gong and Dave Sturt is a great player. Those Vigier basses are awesome. I owned a graphite Arpege in the 80's and on reflection it was probably the best bass that I have owned.

The Softstep is a really useful piece of kit - and so easy transport. I used to use a Behringer 1010 which was fine but unwieldy. The Softstep is also extremely programmable - though you'll need extremely dextrous feet to take advantage of the multi function buttons! They are now distributed by MSL who also do Markbass gear - they are very supportive. As for bass thoughts from Planet Gong . . . would love to get it together - but I'm extremely busy atm with various projects (including a new Gong album) - no time for reflection! May be a project for the Christmas holidays!

Long may it play on.
Raslee
Haha awesome thread. Great to hear from you on basschat Dave, i saw you at Exeter last year with Orlando...is he still on drums? Being a bit of a Gong and Howlett nerd fan (a few conventions ahem!) I was wondering how Gong would now sound with the new line up...anyhow you did me proud and the new guitar guy (name escapes me) was great too - brilliant . Thanks for sharing your rig wizardy too...i must confess to geeking over it to my uninterested wife enroute home after last years Exeter gig. Is Steffi Sharpstrings still part of the equation? I've followed some of his solo stuff which sounds great......Xilddx you'd like that too.
