Shabbs Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Is there much a difference between the Duncan Designed pickups on the VM Squier and the standard 2001 MIM pup, and finally would passive EMG's make much of a difference? Appreciated. Quote
Silvia Bluejay Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Sorry can't help, but I'm bumping this question and hoping someone comes to your rescue. Quote
lettsguitars Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 All depends what sound you're after, doesn't it? If you're looking for an emg sound then the emg's will make a big difference! Quote
Shabbs Posted December 7, 2012 Author Posted December 7, 2012 (edited) So is there much of a difference in sound between the Duncan Designed or MIM's, sorry and should have said passive not active PUPs Edited December 9, 2012 by Shabbs Quote
Jimryan Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 I took the Duncan design pickup out of my VM. They're ok, stock (ish) sound really. I replaced it with a SD quarter pounder. Then added a ceramic MM bucker. So all in all, couldn't compare it to a MIM precision sound, but SD pickups are awesome. Quote
LawrenceH Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Just from trying VM in shops, I got the impression the VM pickups are very thick at the bottom, with a much-restricted top end. By contrast the MIMs tend to sound thinner but have greater bandwidth. Very different in character I'd say, which one you prefer though...? More expensive pickups tend IME to let you have a bit of a best of both worlds whilst still leaning one way or the other. My Fender 75RI jazz pickups, which I dropped into a MIM Classic 70s J cut like the proverbial knife but still have a respectable bottom end. My DiMarzio Model Js are thick like the Duncan Designed, but with wider bandwidth/better top-end. Quote
Shabbs Posted December 7, 2012 Author Posted December 7, 2012 That helps as I found the vm's very thick at the lower end. Appreciated. Quote
