I have two amps - a Peavey Minx 30 watt and a Laney R1. I have a buzz when I use one particular bass - the Peavey, but NOT when I use the Laney. I tested the same bass using the same lead on both amps and the Peavey buzzes when I take my fingers off strings and the Laney doesn't buzz at all. So I know it's not the lead.

So, question is: Have I got an earthing / grounding problem with the Peavey and, if so, how do I check the earthing on it. (I have a multimeter if that helps). Any advice what to do or look at appreciated. BTW, I am not much of an electrician so keep it simple..... Also, the amp has one of those moulded plastic mains plugs so I can't even open it up to look.

Set the multimeter to ohms. One probe on the earth pin on the plug and the other probe to a bare bit of the amp chassis or jack socket nut and you should get a reading this means that the earth is good. No reading and the earth is bad.
