Cab advice needed - adding another driver

Morning all,

Need some help,

I'm currently using my DIY 1x15. It's great and all, but lacks that little bit of high end clarity. So this got me thinking.

At home I have a spare Ibanez practice amp. Just a little "10w" model. If I had a crossover made up, could I fit this little driver in with the 1x15, and use it like a tweeter just to help the highs come through.

Would this work?

How about using the practice amp alongside the 1*15 to add the top? Cut all the bass out so it doesn't fart out...

What head are you using? Like suggested above try a line out into the combo input and set the EQ for the top end only. Failing that grab a cheap second hand cab maybe a 2x10 or similar.

Using a TC elec BH250. I'd love to get a 2x10, but right now could only afford a donated one.

It'd work, but whether it'd be any good or not is another matter and you'd still have to get the crossover. If you're going down that route, may as well add in a cheap tweeter.
Cheapest way to do it would be a piezo and then you can use a very rudimentary high-pass crossover or even none at all. Total cost not more than a tenner

See how it sounds with the combo added for now then, I would not bother modding your cab, I have tried with varying degrees of success.

It worked well but for the money you could just get a decent used cab that would pair up nice with that TC head

There's nothing to lose by trying the practice amp with the bass turned down with your regular cab. It's not how it will sound in the cab though. The practice amp may be lending it's own tone and you will be using the volume control to balance the speakers. The next stage will be to try the speaker only connected in parallel to your 15. If you get a reversible electrolytic of about 10-20 microfarads and connect it in series this will filter out most of the bass and act as a simple crossover (actually a high pass filter).

if you are still encouraged then you could go on to look at a better small speaker to partner your 15 and a proper crossover. The small 'tweeter' will need to be in its own sealed box built as small as practicable inside your main cab.

If you like fiddling this will give you no end of fun, it might even improve your sound and you'll learn loads. If you just want a good sound and don't have this sort of curiosity then there's better ways. Me, I'd fiddle.

I have one of these

in a cab with a 15. It's got a closed back so you don't need to partition it off.

I'm driving it with its own amp, but it'd work well enough with a series cap as Phil describes.10uF will cross over around 200Hz and protect the speaker from the excesses of the bass.

Yours is probably nicer than a piezo, but at under £6 and the ability to run without a crossover one of these is probably worth a punt

I'd wire it up outside the cab first to see what it sounded like, if it was harsh I might go crazy and splash out on a resistor and cap!
