Exile252 Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I'm tempted to de-fret my Jazz, but I was wondering, does anyone know a guide price for what people generally do it for? Thanks guys Quote
geilerbass Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 The Gallery in London charge £70 - I got my old Bass Collection done there a couple of years ago and Martin did an amazing job (as usual). I'm not sure how that compares to other places though. Quote
Kiwi Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Ideally you need a special set of snub nosed pliers and something to fill the slots with. Machines has done it himself already I believe. Quote
Machines Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Here is an excellent and somewhat over complex guide - http://www.bassdefret.com/how-to-defret/index.php . Quote
markytbass Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I did it to a Jazz I had a few years ago, and then had to sell it . If I can't find a fretless I like in the next week or so I'll be doing it again to another bass. The trick is to get the frets out without damaging the fretboard. After that I found it strait forward. Quote
Exile252 Posted May 13, 2008 Author Posted May 13, 2008 mhm, I don't think I have any of the tools to do that hehe. Though I;'ll have to ask my dad about what we have in the house. Quote
markytbass Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008
Though I;'ll have to ask my dad about what we have in the house.
A screwdriver and 5lb lump hammer should do the trick. Quote
thedarxide Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 I used a pair of pliers (the pincer kind) and then used wood filler and several hours of sanding. Isn't perfect but it does the job. Then I went a bought a real fretless instead There's some pics here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=18151 As you can see, I damaged the fretboard around the frets a little, which shows with uneven lines. The neck is still smooth however, it just looks a bit naff. Quote
