paddy mcbride
Hi guys, I have real GAS for a SB-2 and wondered what your opinions are on the Tribute series version? Is it worth the £600approx price tag? I appreciate that the value of an instrument is subjective but is this a reasonable price for this bass? What would it cost for a USA version and would there be enough of a difference to make the extra money worth it? Thanks Paddy
neepheid
Ouch, £600 seems a bit steep. A quick search reveals that you can get one from Germany for €500. And we're all one happy European Union after all, so no tax to worry about. Or you could get this one for £315 all in. Second hand, but as new condition. You shouldn't have any worries with a G&L Tribute. I have a Tribute L-2000 and it's a fantastic bass. I don't feel like I'm missing out on much versus a USA G&L, and I have had a go of one. Yes it had a fancy flamed top, but it didn't feel that much "better" than my Tribute. Tuners were probably screwed on 100% straight on the USA one
paddy mcbride
Yeah I saw that one but unfortunately, I'm looking for a black one.
neepheid
Ach, oh well. http://www.rock-gear.de/en/Basses/Electric-Basses/4-String-Bass-Guitars/G-L-Tribute-SB-2-Metallic-Black.html ? Just a smidge over £400 plus postage if you don't mind getting it from Germany.
cocco
I've been fancying one of these too, just the J neck puts me right off.
Graham
Is it a J profile on the tribute then? A mate of mine had the USA version and said it made his Jazz feel like a pencil.
cocco
I'm pretty sure it is. I don't mind a skinny radius but I need that wide nut. That's the only thing that puts me off the bass. I'm sure if you wanted to go US you could get a fat neck.

hamfist
L series tributes have big chunky necks. The SB2's have J-type necks, 1.5" nuts etc. I have just ordered an SB2 tribute from rock-gear in Germany. It sounds like EXACTLY what I am looking for and , as neepheid states, way, way cheaper than UK dealers for these particular basses. In fact the SB2's seem to be hardly known in this country. On Talkbass, the SB2's are very well thought of. Ah well, I'm getting closer ! At least now I know I want a P sound with a J neck ! Hopefully this SB2 will be "it" ! There is not much decent on the SB2 on youtube showing what it's really capable of, and what it is, is a super P really. THe bridge pickup seems to be more for tone control than useful in it's own right. I like this video of two japanese lads in a music shop arsing around with a tribute SB2 and a JB. They don't know what they are doing and can't play much, but the moment one of them turns the SB2 onto it's neck pickup (at about 2:15) ........ well I love the look on their faces and their comments (although I can't understand them) which seem to say ... "woah, so that's what a P bass is supposed to sound like !"
