elephantgrey Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 I am looking to start playing more swing, the jazz sub-genre, not the rhythmical technique (though i'm guessing that has something to do with it anyway). I am wondering if i can get some hints/tips/advice about techniques specific to the genre, and its popular scales scales, it would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance, elephantgrey Quote
Bilbo Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Listen to Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Reginald Veal Playing wise, play 4 beats to the bar and rarely stick any rhythmic kicks in. Too much 'fiddling' undermines the swing. Quote
elephantgrey Posted December 7, 2012 Author Posted December 7, 2012 Cheers for the advice, ill give them a listen. Quote
steve Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 more recent examples include The Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (all of Bilbo's suggestions must be pretenders because they don't have 'Daddy' in the band name ) Quote
Bilbo Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 Count Basie had Papa Jo Jones on drums... Quote
