Telebass Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 (edited) Personally, I use an SM57 (for 30 years, the choice of mic for the podium of the President of the USA - good enough recommendation!), backed up by a Samson Q7 as a spare. Edited May 13, 2008 by Telebass Quote
acidbass Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 SM58 for me, but I sang through one of those Sennheiser Mics recently at a gig (not sure of the model number) and it sounded great! Quote
Deep Thought Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 It's a thing I intend to get myself soon-a decent mike. I currently sing through a Peavey thing owned by our lead singer, but I plan on getting myself something decent(ish), especially after I had a go on hers a while ago (an expensive Shure wireless job) and was amazed at the difference. I've heard the Sennheisers are pretty good too. Quote
Muppet Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 58 for me too, but I do have a 57, mainly for miking guitar cabs. You're on about singing live, Den, as opposed to recording I assume? Steve Quote
obbm Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 I have a Sony F780. Sony provided the wireless mics for one of the Rolling Stones world tours and produced a capsule for Jagger which had the same characteristics as the SM58. I have the same. I think it's better and clearer. Keep an eye on ebay as they come up sometimes and are great value. Quote
s_u_y_* Posted May 15, 2008 Posted May 15, 2008 Thank God I can't sing. One less thing to GAS over. Quote
johnnylager Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 58. Then unscrew the shield to make a 57 to mike the bass cab in the studio! Excellent mikes. Quote

NJW Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 I do not need (he does not need) A microphone... (a microphone...) My voice is f****n POWERFULLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Quote
casapete Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Shure SM58 BETA - knocks ten bells out of a standard 58, and can be had for just over £100 if you look around. Used by everyone - keep an out out on TV etc, the Beta has a blue plastic ring around the grille, whereas the standard 58 is silver. Increased output , robust, great tone and lasts for ever! Quote
clauster Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 I'm not a singer but the ne in my band has 2 X Beta58s and one wireless Beta58 among many other mics. He really rates them for vox Quote
Mr Fudge Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 EV ones that bounce when dropped. SM ?? too harsh for my ears. Quote
Galilee Posted May 21, 2008 Posted May 21, 2008 I bought 2 SM58s a couple of years ago. They're pretty cheap now and seem fine to me. Mind you, I'm hardly Whitney Houston... Quote
Dubs Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 (edited) Sennheiser e865. A fair bit of cash but well worth it, they beat the sh*t out of the 58 and 57 (although it costs twice as much  ) Edited May 26, 2008 by benwhiteuk Quote
Deep Thought Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 I nipped into a shop last week in search of a microphone, and came out with a Shure PG58-according to the chap in the shop not a great deal different to an SM58, not as much longevity but about half the price, so I thought I'd give it a go. I'll report when I get a chance to use it. Quote
stingrayfan Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 JTS929. Solid as a 58 but a bit brighter and more output. Plus at £25 a go, they're cheap to replace when invariably, some drunkard knocks your mic stand over while flailing around. Quote
bass player spinn Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Im not in any major band, but if you want a good reliable mic go with shure. i run a 38channel sound system for about 400 people every week. we use shure(non wireless) they are really good and i dont ever have any problem with them. Quote
alexclaber Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 I sound better through a Beta 58 than through an SM58, but better again through an SM57 than the Beta 58. Strange but true. I think it's because I have quite a deep voice but quite a large amount of sharp treble overtones and the more minimal presence peak of the 57 therefore stops those edges overwhelming the midrange of my voice. Also the 57 rolls off higher and more smoothly, thus less boom. Alex Quote

If I could get the sound of my large diaphragm studio condenser live then that would be very nice. One issue as a singing bassist is that the super and hypercardioid pickup pattern mics can be more difficult to use as it isn't as easy to stay on-axis when you're playing an instrument. Alex Quote
crez5150 Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 For live use your better off sticking with a dynamic Cardioid microphone. Obviously with the new Neo technology nowadays most modern mics sound way better than the old 57's and 58's which to be fair, the technology is out of the Ark!! Buy a Sennheiser!! Quote
