mikegatward Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 I'm in discussions with a woodworker guy about making a prototype casing for my Orange Terror. It would be covered in orange tolex and would be designed so the amp could be pulled out easily to allow for valve changes etc. It will probably incorporate mesh parts around the vented areas. If the prototype is successful, I might look to have a batch of these made up so wondered what the likely interest would be from the BC community. I've no idea on cost as yet - and the cost may well come down to the numbers involved So if you're interested in taking it further then shout up. i'm also interested to hear ideas about design I've heard of people in the US making and selling this type of thing but it all seems a bit hit and miss and impractical in terms of shipping costs etc Quote
Happy Jack Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 A few fairly obvious questions:

Will this design change (i.e. enlarge) the dimensions much?
What sort of weight penalty would come with the wooden casing?
What ballpark cost figure have you in mind?
Quote
Stroopy121 Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 I don't own a terror bass but it's on my GAS list. I love the idea of it being in a traditional looking Orange tolex covered wooden case - I'd go for one providing the weight and cost were reasonably low. xx Quote

Chest Rockwell Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 that'd be a yes from me, subject to the questions raised above. Quote
Roland Rock Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 I once made an amp cover out of an old oak bureau, a fireguard and some veneer offcuts, and it turned out quite nicely. You're right to ensure easy access to the gubbins (I wish I had :-D). Note that many cases have the face and knobs recessed to provide protection - something I decided not to do and it's never been an issue, but you may want to consider it. If it's being covered in orange tolex, I don't see any reason that it couldn't be made from ply. This can be light, strong, and less prone to movement, as long as you get your jointing right. let us know how you get on Quote

Cat Burrito Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 100% interested. There was a guy selling these on EBay a while back & I got pipped to the post. He said he'd import more & then never did. This would be amazing if it comes off. Cheers Quote
Salt on your Bass? Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Looks nice! I assume theres no detrement to the cooling of the amp? Quote
Dubs Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Sounds like it would look pretty cool, but isn't half the appeal of a Terror Bass the fact that it's small and light? Won't this just add bulk and mass and make it less easy to carry around? Can't help thinking "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"... Quote
BigRedX Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Out of interest is it possible to get the Terror Bass innards into a 2U case? The current case might be small and light, but it's not very rack friendly. Quote
jackers Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 I've been thinking about getting a terror bass as my back up, and I would be very very interested in this Would be interested to know when you have an idea of cost too Quote
Delberthot Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 I'm sure that someone on here got a sleeve made for theirs but I can't remember how it was finished Quote
jaydentaku Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 I wonder how the DI and effects loop ports would be dealt with. I am guessing one square hole would be the best approach. Quote

jaydentaku Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Don't like that at all. It looks expertly made, but it bares no relation to the orange enclosure style. I am a perfectionist though, in terms of design that is. Quote
Alfie Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 I have been looking for this sort of thing for ages so sign me up. Would it be possible to request a batch done in black to go with barefaced? Quote
mikegatward Posted December 24, 2012 Author Posted December 24, 2012 Xmas eve update Thanks for all the feedback - things will go quiet for a while with Xmas hols but I'll be talking to the woodwork man in early Jan about a prototype and I've already sourced some orange tolex In the meantime, merry Xmas to all basschatters Quote
gub Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 Merry Christmas and some interest from me too Quote
