im posting for two reasons.. the frickin awsome bass playing on these tracks, and the tracks i dont yet know that im hoping you dudes are gonna post..

this is possibly the some of the best bass playing ive ever heard, willie weeks is on fire on this track.. no flash though, just total groove.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLUh70zp0LE

my second bassline favorite is so embedded into my brain.. imo, its a perfect bass line.. he plays it so so well.......... like alot of bass lines i love, bar the first and third and forth of my posts, there is not alot going on.. but its played with so much good taste.. i think marcus miller is master at this...

this bass playing by ernie mckone is just incredible.. ive seen him play and he has a really lazy technique, god knows how he does what he does... his note choices and groove are epic..

just incredible bass lines to compliment the chords.. jamerson was just the master at doing this style of playing....

Well... in the context of what you've got there, I must post this...

Jamerson I believe, though I'm prepared to stand corrected...

Roundabout - Chris Squire, Yes
Used to be a Cha Cha - Jaco
Pursuit of Accidents - Mark King, Level 42
Medieval Overture - Stanley Clarke, RTF

Posted

In no particular order:

Pump it Up - Elvis Costello & The Attractions
It`s Too Bad - The Jam
Down in The Tube Station - The Jam
Nice & Sleazy - The Stranglers

Posted

The first tune I thought of was 'Little Ghetto Boy'-it helps that I've just had it on in the car.

I don't think I can name just 4. Marcus on 'The Nightfly' is great. Anthony Jackson on
'Slip,Sliding Away' and 'For the Love of Money' is fantastic. Jaco on 'A Remark You Made'
is beautiful. Jamerson on 'What's Going On' and 'Bernadette' is great. Bob Babbitt on
'Midnight Train to Georgia'.Pino on 'Chicken Grease' is too funky. Larry Graham on 'Hair'
and 'Everyday People'.Bryan Beller on 'Why Am I Your Guy?' is crazy. Scott Thunes on 'Valley Girl'.
Les Claypool on 'Tommy The Cat'. Me'Shell on 'If That's Your Boyfriend'.
There are just far too many to choose from.

These change all the time for me but at the moment its

Tear Your Playhouse Down -Pino
Jammin' in Brazil -Sun
Leave That Thing Alone -Geddy Lee
Last but not least, bit more obscure:
Star Wars -Meco http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFBzRqdWN2w -highlights are Cantina Band section at 9:06, and the bass fills in the section that starts at 11:40 (11:47 and 12:02) are my favourite fills ever. :gas:

I've got to echo Doddy's sentiments - 4 just isn't enough - I could have done this in numerous genre..Soul/Reggae/Rock/etc

I went for stuff that not everybody would have "voted" for...Subject to change of course...

Pray like Aretha Franklin - Scritti Pollitti
Breezin' - George Benson
Ride on Time - Black Box
I want you back - The Jackson 5

Can I come back tomorrow with another list??

Wow only 4 to choose from...... I guess it would probably be:
Sir Duke.....Stevie Wonder
White Boys and Heros.......Pino for Gary Numan
Notice Me....Stuart Morrow for New Model Army
Wonderland.....Pino for Paul Young.

Ask me tomorrow I and Iwould probably choose 4 different ones......I mean how can there be no early Heaven 17, no Jam, Stranglers etc....i'll not sleep tonight for worrying about this now!

The Magnificent Seven - The Clash

WMA - Pearl Jam (same three notes all the way through but works perfectly)

The Body Electric - Rush

Toiler on the Sea...nah, scratch that, Baroque Bordello...on second thoughts, Another Camden Afternoon...maybe Freddie Laker...or possibly Do You Wanna/Death and Night and Blood...sod it, just insert any JJ Burnel Stranglers/solo basslines here.

More left-field than most of these suggestions, but mine are probably:

I just love his bass line, ridiculously simple but just so perfect.

One of my favourite songs of all times so it's no surprise I like the bassline, but I think it's really creative. Fitting a good bassline around 2 guitars, keyboards, strings, vocals and a very busy drum part can't be easy, but I love the way the bass meanders around everything. Every instrument is doing it's own thing but it never sounds cluttered, at least to me.

As I apparently can't even post links to more than 2 youtube vids per post...

This is a live version, and the band's bassist doesn't actually play it (still not sure why), but I don't think I'll ever tire of listening to this song, the bass providing the melody while the guitars swirl around it is just sublime.

I will never know how a 3 piece managed to sound this huge, even live.

Billy Sheehan - 'Ladies Night In Buffalo' off Dave Lee Roth's 'Eat 'Em and Smile'

Chris Squire - 'Gates Of Delirium' off Yes' 'Relayer'

John Patitucci - 'Cool Weasel Boogie' off Chick Corea's 'Elektric Band' album

Marc Johnson - 'Bass Desires' off his ECM album 'Bass Desires'

These could easily change given my mood, but right now...

Rats - Pearl Jam....great main riff and outro, but also love the cool groove going on behind the solo.

Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder....obviously the horn/bass unison section, but love the restraint shown during the choruses until the last chorus where Nate Watts lets rip.

So Lonely - The Police....simplicity personified and a tasteful key change is never a bad thing in my books.

Lounge Act - Nirvana....the reason I picked up a bass in the first place. Some nice things going on in the chorus too.

Posted

Lemon song - Led Zeppelin
Who Knows - Band of Gypsies
Hang up your Hang-ups - Herbie Hancock
Sunshine of Your Love - Cream

Bit low-brow maybe, but they get me going.

Back again..

Cantonese Boy - Japan (we are not fit to worship at the feet of Mick Karn)
Groove is in the Heart - Dee-Lite (though it is sampled from something else - help me out here??)
Call me Al - Paul Simon
Ridin' on a Train - The Pasadenas

Probably would have changed my mind again by tomorrow...

Posted

I knew I would be back...... Hit Me with your Rythym Stick, Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, What a Waste, Reasons to be Cheerful how can I have missed Mr Watt-Roy off my list.....!

Posted

Just looked it up, the bassline in Groove is in the Heart is sampled from Herbie Hancocks "Bring down the Birds".
Thought about putting Groove is in the Heart as one of my top four but I was ashamed, shouldn't have been.
