Groove is in the Heart - Dee-Lite (though it is sampled from something else - help me out here??)

Just looked it up, the bassline in Groove is in the Heart is sampled from Herbie Hancocks "Bring down the Birds".
The track does indeed in part feature Herbie's 'Bring Down the Birds', but is also made up from other samples too... Vernon Burch's 'Get Up' (drum track, also forms the slide whistle breakdown) and the horn riff from Eddie Jefferson's 'Psychedelic Sally'. It is Bootsy Collins on bass and guest vocals and the rap is by Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest.

Couldn't possibly pick 4 and there have been some corkers already. I'll have a bash at 4 from different genres that are worth checking out though;

Love Shack - B52s
The Way - Meshell NdegeOcello
Birdland - Weather Report
Pressure and Time - Rival Sons

Got the time - Joe Jackson (Graham Maby)
Wait for History - Deconstruction (Eric Avery)
Jump into the Fire - Harry Nillson (Don't know if it was Herbie Flowers or Klaus Voorman!)
This is the picture (excellent birds) - Peter Gabriel (Larry Fast?)

As said by others, it'll be all change tomorrow!

Excellent! Saw him play for Phil Collins in 90, never knew that though.

obviously not the original bass line (not sure who played the original) but Sharay is smokin on this.. his fills, note choices and timing are just off the wall.. he plays it perfectly...

Hawkwind - Motorhead (yes I did say Hawkwind) ... check it out here

Good choice, I always prefered the bass tone on the Hawkwind version. I seem to remember another version they did that was identical except for Dave Brock on vocals (which I prefered) though sadly missing that awesome violin solo.

Yeah that is a great hook, instantly recognisable, made a hit record, and the sort of thing that 99% of bass players would never do.

Love Billy's line on Ladies nite in Buffalo. Straight 8ths all the way, great groove with Greg Bissonette.
