stingrayPete1977
Its one of my favourite of all time! The guy who plays it is some serious jazzer in NY I beleive?
Doddy
Very cool line by Tracy Wormworth...she later played with Sting for a bit. My favourite Xmas line is probably Donny Hathaway's keyboard bass part on 'This Christmas'.

stingrayPete1977
David Hofstra is your man , Tracy did not join until 82 which is when the song became a hit but it was recorded and released in 81 a year before Hofstra left. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Waitresses Edited December 26, 2012 by stingrayPete1977
Dingus
David Hofstra is your man , Tracy did not join until 82 which is when the song became a hit but it was recorded and released in 81 a year before Hofstra left. http://en.m.wikipedi.../The_Waitresses
I remember this record when it came out , they used to play it on Radio 1 and I think it was a minor hit . It was indeed 1981 . Very abstract bassline . My favourite Christmas bassline is me playing Good King Wenceslas when I am pissed . The neighbours love it . lowregisterhead
Well, there you go. Funny how these things get mixed up in your head over time - I thought it was Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads playing bass on this, but I must have got confused with Tom Tom Club's 'Wordy Rappinghood'... old age setting in... :-s
Doddy
David Hofstra is your man , Tracy did not join until 82 which is when the song became a hit but it was recorded and released in 81 a year before Hofstra left. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Waitresses
According to the interview/transcription in the Holiday '09 issue of Bass Player, Wormworth had replaced Hofstra in '81 and recorded 'Christmas Wrapping' (on a '78 Precision given to her by Marcus Miller) in August of that year. stingrayPete1977
See I knew this was a tricky one as it has been covered before, if memory serves it may even be a case that she played the recorded version on the record but hofstra had already wrote it and done a rough or previous version of it? Doddy
In the same article it says that a very basic demo was brought in by the guitarist at the start of the session and the band added their parts and recorded it on the same day. stingrayPete1977
And to flip it back I have found numerous examples saying the lp was finished by Hofstra and Tracy joined after to do the live shows? https://itunes.apple.com/gb/artist/the-waitresses/id348141 We need to put them in a room and make them decide! lowregisterhead
On the subject of great syncopated bass lines by female bass players, what about Carol Colman of Kid Creole and the Coconuts - 'Stool Pigeon', 'Annie I'm Not Your Daddy', 'I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby' to name just three...
