Guest bassman7755
and I always use the harmonics on the 5/7th frets to tune the strings - the 'Here Comes The Bride' thing is just for rough r tuning from scratch...
Starting from the E string the intervals of the other open strings are 4th, flat 7th, flat 3rd (an octave up of course). This way you get to practice three intervals instead of one. Also you should never tune a guitar or bass by harmonics. The reason is mathematically quite complicated see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_temperament But the short answer is that natural overtones do not align precisely with the way the semitone intervals are calculated on a modern equal tempered instrument (i.e. where each semitone is a mathematically exact 1/12 subdivision on an octave). Only the octave harmonic is genuinely a "perfect" interval for tuning and intonation setting purposes. From the table on that page it would seem that a 4th harmonic is about 2 cents (2 hundredths of an semitone) flat compared to the official equal tempered 4th so by stacking three such tuning steps you are accumulating an error of nearly 6 cents so G string would be noticeable flat. RhysP
The Gary Willis Ear Training book is meant to be very good. I've had a copy for years but have never used* it so I can't comment on it's effectiveness unfortunately. Guest bassman7755
I have played this, I have no idea what is going on.
It plays 2 notes then tells you the interval between them, then plays the notes again and tells you the note names (which is pointless and confusing IMO). The weird phrasing of the auto generated speech and the american accent conspire to make it difficult to understand at times.
