jhk
If you put the E to C strings from a six string set onto a five string bass and then tuned them B to G...................................... physically it would work,but..........what are the downsides/pitfalls if any ,for doing this?..........tuning problems/string tension issues?....this is for 35 inch scale.............. this comes after not being able to source sensibly priced `ultra light` guage bass strings for a 5 string bass.......... ideally 35 through to 110(120 max) I`ll have my coat ready just in case this really is a stupid question....... regards
Mog
The tension will be pants. Dropping an E string down to low B would probably render it next to unplayable. I reckon a set of Extra slinkys (the blue ones) is the closest you'll get to that gauge. Edited December 30, 2012 by Mog
Truckstop
There is literally no benefit to do that. Might be able to get away with a .115 set, but it'd still be pretty uncomfortable to play and would sound pretty dreadful. The lack of tension would really affect how you play and how you like to sound. Sorry mate, you'll have to bite the bullet and get a set of proper gauge strings!
