mcnach Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 (edited) I'm starting a new funky project and was listening to some old stuff to decide on a couple of covers to mix with our original stuff... and came across this jewel. I just had to share it... enjoy! Edited January 2, 2013 by mcnach Quote
discreet Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 You can't beat the Meters... real music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X-6_0YqgeI Quote
Mykesbass Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Heard them on Craig Charles a few months back, couldn't believe I'd never come across them before. Wonderful stuff and hoping to find some affordable vinyl for my new turntable - bet it sounds great analogue! Quote
Kirky Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Yep, George Porter Jr is the man for funk bass. Quote
thisnameistaken Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 The guitarist in my band's dad introduced us to The Meters when we were all 16. He used to bung us the occasional record to see what we thought and they were all great - lots of funk like The Meters and Graham Central Station, but mostly stuff like Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley, Modern Jazz Quartet, Art Blakey, etc. We never would've gone looking for that stuff ourselves so he did us all a big favour. KingPrawn Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Great band, and this is one of those must bass lines for all bass players to learn. Great groove and expression http://youtu.be/xSoyaOVYk0E Quote
mcnach Posted January 3, 2013 Author Posted January 3, 2013 I only recently "discovered" them. I knew Cissy Strut and a couple of other tracks that did not really grab me... but when my guitarist was talking about some Meters track a while ago I decided to investigate properly... I could not believe I had not paid attention to them for so many years! Quote
JohnFitzgerald Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 You can never have too much funk in your life. I've even managed to squeeze a bit of it into the prog :-) Quote
scalpy Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Second Line! Love those crazy rhythms. Check out Right Place Wrong Time by Dr John for more George Porter Jnr genius! Quote

ead Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 They have also played for a number of other artists as their backing band. Quote
BassBunny Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 (edited)
They have also played for a number of other artists as their backing band.
One of them being Jess Roden who is one of my all time fave singers. His version of On Broadway, with The Meters in attendance, is awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB8BcBjMYoU Edited March 24, 2014 by icastle Link fixed. Quote
