RockfordStone
time has run out on me this month i think. looks like i'll have to wait until next month to enter again suffering a proper dry spell writing wise at the moment
Bilbo
Bounce/render the MIDI tracks down to Audio [If you are happy with the notes] It then takes a big load of your CPU - You are then free to add more FX's and the MIDI tracks won't misbehave. Nice track by the way, it builds well. Garry
How do I make that work turning a midi track into an audio one, Garry?
BigRedX
MIDI uses way less processing power than audio. However if it's controlling a VST/AU instrument that's a different matter.
Dave Vader
How do I make that work turning a midi track into an audio one, Garry?
mute all your other tracks and record a mono mixdown track with just your midi instrument playing. Move it to a spare audio track and rename it so you know what it is. Job done (at least that's how I do it)
Bilbo
I can see how that would work.

lowdown
I think that would depend on the samples it was triggering. Certain soundbanks can be horrendous
The Samples would be loaded into RAM or direct disc streaming, that's not what causes the CPU drain or indeed even a MIDI track, It's the actual Soft synth, Rompler or Sampler and also some FX's. [some are light on CPU - but most are not] One way around this is Freezing the track [Different DAW's do it in different ways, but the same outcome] This will leave you with just an Audio track, and the Synth etc has been disengaged and free's up the CPU. And of course you can unfreeze if you want to change notes/edit etc then freeze again. The other way is just to record the loaded MIDI track to an Audio track, or even easier, just bounce/render down, then unload the CPU hogging Instrument. These days though with i7 processors [Quad core] and plenty of RAM you should be able to run plenty of VSTi's without your computer spitting at you. Dave Vader
I tend to record midi to my old outboard synths (mostly a Roland D110) so it's just sending midi data as a placeholder, and then throw it at softsynths once I've got the notes right, and everything else in place musically. Certain soundbanks can be horrendous
No you are confusing pure MIDI with virtual instruments. The MIDI data itself takes almost zero processing power by todays standards - remember you could get 16 channels of polyphonic data down a single MIDI cable that uses early 80s computer technology. So if you are using the MIDI data to control external synths, then it has a very small processing footprint. However when you are using the MIDI data to control VST or AU virtual instruments in the box it's the instrument itself that requires all the processing power. urb
If you use Logic you can just go 'bounce in place' on your VST tracks - this will then bounce an audio version of your MIDI track on to a new audio track - simples.
Bobby K
Hello chaps! I was terrified that my pic would end up being really uninspiring, but how wrong I was! Some excellent work so far, loved listening to them. Some excellent interpretations of the pic. Love the eastern vibe from Garry's, but Stephen Houghton - genius! Two hours work?? Incredible result mate! Typically wishing I'd had a go too now, but it's been a bit of a mad month for me and when I did have some time, I just couldn't get going with it - hopefully have a go next month. Skol303
Just finished mine for this month… https://soundcloud.com/skollob/make-it-right I've been listening to a lot of old Bristolian trip hop recently - Massive Attack and Portishead in particular - which I think has leaked into my musical subconscious Was hoping to persuade Mrs Skol to sing the vocal on it, but she's crazy busy with work (stressed teacher) hence I ended up doing it myself this evening. A few bum notes but heh, who's counting. Cheers all! And thanks to Bob for picking a cracking picture - it's sparked a lot of different ideas by the sound of things. The whole notion of fear as a suffocating blanket was floating around my mind when I was trying to get some inspiration this month, but I just couldn't get going with it. I had a working title, "The sea of lost souls" - which was kind of coming from the same idea, I just didn't know how to convey it musically. I was stuck on trying to convey it too conventionally, as a song with words, but I was making myself laugh with how corny it was coming out To do it in a more narrative style as you have really works, so hats off

The news clip is from Al Jazeera TV - they have a library of news videos that are available under Creative Commons license.
