[/quote] mute all your other tracks and record a mono mixdown track with just your midi instrument playing. Move it to a spare audio track and rename it so you know what it is. Certain soundbanks can be horrendous [/quote] The Samples would be loaded into RAM or direct disc streaming, that's not what causes the CPU drain or indeed even a MIDI track, It's the actual Soft synth, Rompler or Sampler and also some FX's. [some are light on CPU - but most are not] One way around this is Freezing the track [Different DAW's do it in different ways, but the same outcome] This will leave you with just an Audio track, and the Synth etc has been disengaged and free's up the CPU. And of course you can unfreeze if you want to change notes/edit etc then freeze again. The other way is just to record the loaded MIDI track to an Audio track, or even easier, just bounce/render down, then unload the CPU hogging Instrument. These days though with i7 processors [Quad core] and plenty of RAM you should be able to run plenty of VSTi's without your computer spitting at you. The MIDI data itself takes almost zero processing power by todays standards - remember you could get 16 channels of polyphonic data down a single MIDI cable that uses early 80s computer technology. So if you are using the MIDI data to control external synths, then it has a very small processing footprint. However when you are using the MIDI data to control VST or AU virtual instruments in the box it's the instrument itself that requires all the processing power. Some excellent work so far, loved listening to them. Some excellent interpretations of the pic. Love the eastern vibe from Garry's, but Stephen Houghton - genius! Two hours work?? Incredible result mate! Typically wishing I'd had a go too now, but it's been a bit of a mad month for me and when I did have some time, I just couldn't get going with it - hopefully have a go next month. [/quote] Gotta say the words I am using arent mine they are famous quotes about fear, I wish I had come up with them but I am not that clever, just realised I hadnt mentioned this in my earlier post and dont want to mislead anyone into thinking they are my creations, I wish. The whole notion of fear as a suffocating blanket was floating around my mind when I was trying to get some inspiration this month, but I just couldn't get going with it. I had a working title,[i] "The sea of lost souls" [/i]- which was kind of coming from the same idea, I just didn't know how to convey it musically. The news clips at the end are just superb and fitting too, a nice icing on a tremendous cake! Now, that's certainly upset the voting apple cart for me... It actually took me a while to find a news report that wasn't under commercial copyright (but I was sufficiently nerdy to keep looking!).
