I was going to suggest a beautiful basses thread, but of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder... as proved here. :D
And there's more than enough gear porn on here already! Phwooar! Eh? Eh?

Bubinga clad flotsam in the shape of Gandalfs cock with 14 active pickup variations.
I understand there are still brainbruised old hippys out there, but why make a bass for them?

I quite like it when new body shapes have been designed and try to break the mould.

What I don't like is the excess of designs/constructions like this:
http://www.thelowend...ess/sca8-jo.jpg

The words 'get a life' and boring music of similar excess spring to mind. Very judgemental and sweeping, I know, but what's the point of this thread otherwise?

(can't upload pics for some reason)

I think the aesthetics can be hijacked by comments, and therefore ruined for ever more, for example: Bongo = bog seat, Corvette top horn = nob. It's impossible to unsee this sort of thing once it's been pointed out. Sorry.

In other news, I don't like Jazzes, singlecuts or reliced anything, but then I have a Dingwall, a pointy Explorer thingy and a Thunderbird, so what do I know? :D

Ahh, but what do they actually play like and sound like?? Eh? :P Isn't that more important?
No it isn't obviously - sorry, I don't know what I was thinking there.

Not unless you're particularly weak. The Bongo/bog seat type thing is all fun, I still think they look great.

It's the unexplained prejudgements which are difficult to get rid of. I wouldn't like the Corvette because its a Warwick, which is a ridiculous view but one with which I'm emburdened.

So far, I have learned that at least three of my most treasured basses are really ugly and horrible and so on. :(
Each to their own... I'm not too keen on basses with a neck that looks like a zither (6+ stings), but you have to admire what Anthony Wellington can do with one.

Fender Antigua (mushroomburst) instruments.
Cherryburst (as used by EBMM to ruin otherwise good instruments) - should only be seen on a leather buttonback sofa.
Blueboy (Rickenbacker limited edition colour) - lovely colour but even if I did have sufficient brain trauma to result in GAS for a Rick, I don't think I could bring myself to quote the name to the burly music shop owner.

Over fussy things like the Alembic Dragonwing or whatever it was called. Or that custom abomination with a dragon carved into the body.

So am I.
I've got two toilet seats, two Ps, a J, a cricket bat, a dildo upper horn and whatnot.

Someone (Discreet?) asked what was uneasy about the 50s.
I may have used the wrong word, but in my mind (and I admit to having been wrong about something at least twice since 1963-1964), the design of the fifties was mostly a depressed look back at the thirties without the thirties' elegance.
YMMV and it wasn't meant as a thorough analysis, but to me the fifties' design stands out as innocent and cozy more than elegant and with grandeur - for the most part.

best,
bert
