RichValentine Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 (edited) As mentioned in my introduction post, my return to bass playing is coinciding with the purchase of one of my dream instruments. Have been in discussion with Jon and have pretty much finalised the specs for the instrument and excited to get the project started. The project will start in earnest at the end of January but created this diary to show the progress of construction and my return to the low end. Specs: 5 string singlecut - set neck 34" scale 26 frets 45mm nut width 17mm string spacing at the bridge 20.5mm neck depth at first fret 22.5mm at 12th fret gentle C profile 5 piece laminated neck headstock scarf matching body wood headstock faced front and rear (matching facing wood) cocobolo f/board two way truss rod carbon fibre reinforcement medium fretwire (stainless steel) 2mm side dots 6mm face dots abalone graphite nut alder body wood buckeye facing black veneer between facing and body ramp between pickups (adjustable) - matched to pickup (ebony) polyester basecoat wet look gloss topcoat Schaller 2000 bridge schaller tuners black hardware Nordstrand Fatstack pickups Tending towards the Nordstrand 3B-4A preamp Edited May 3, 2014 by RichValentine Quote

RichValentine Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 Have selected the top for the bass. Will look good with a gloss finish! Ignore the markings on it at the moment... Quote
RichValentine Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 Top has been matched and sanded. Looking better than I could have hoped for. Quote
scojack Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Wait till its got some lacquer on it ...Lush ! Quote
Tinman Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Shuker and Buckeye Burl is the only way Good choice mate. Quote
Dood Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013
Shuker and Buckeye Burl is the only way Good choice mate.
Agreed! It's my favourite wood for facings! Very nice - Especially as each peice can look so so different. Pete's bass (in his Avatar) has lots of lovely rich yellow in, whereas my first Shuker that had buckeye on was much darker with greens and browns. Both very tasty indeed! Quote
RichValentine Posted January 31, 2013 Author Posted January 31, 2013 Deposit paid today. Now it all begins. Dood, I remember your first bass being stunning... will have a look for it on the forums to remind me! Quote
Dood Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 There might be a pic still on the Shuker site. I'll have a looksie! Quote
Dood Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Ahhh, sadly not, but there's a similar spec bass in the gallery. Quote
Rumple Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 That's a lovely piece of wood, I'm also a bit of a fan of 34" scale basses with 17mm string spacing at the bridge. Quote
RichValentine Posted April 18, 2013 Author Posted April 18, 2013 Received a few pictures from Jon today. Expectng a few more, including a preliminary picture of the body with the neck. Until then... The Neck. Its slowly coming to life! Quote

Its starting to look like a bass! Next job is the headstock veneers with black veneers between. Edited June 12, 2013 by RichValentine Quote
MrT-Bass Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 This is looking great...My set neck SC Shuker has become my number 1 bass for almost every gig. I'm pretty sure you'll love it. It'll be interesting to see this one 'come to life' Quote
EddieG Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Good to see you finally getting to that singlecut, bud. Quote
