milosjanic52
I have a pbass and would like to put one pickup in bridge position for more tone versatility. I m on a limited budget so I can get EMG 35HZ, Seymour Duncan STK-J1, or GFS JB Pro Jazz. Can anyone describe the tone and differences of these pickups? I m noob regarding pickups
Lozz196
As Seymour Duncan is mentioned, the hot-stack, STK-J2 is similar to the J1, but a bit higher output. Duff McKagan uses them, so a search for his sound will give an idea of both pickups going - best track I would suggest is the intro to American Man by Velvet Revolver. The J1 won`t be far different in tone, maybe a little less present, so you`ll still get an idea. The hot-stack is also hum cancelling which, with a Jazz pickup is very useful - they can be like a wasps nest!
milosjanic52
Thanks for the response. I just listened to some DUff McKagan stuff on youtube, I like the sound. Maybe a little scooped for my taste, but I guess that's just his eq settings. Do you have any information about EMG 35hz? Do they have enough treble? I don't like too much bass and mudd in my sound. Can't find any videos or audio samples. Edited January 11, 2013 by milosjanic52
Lozz196
Yeah, Duffs attitude to his sound was to up the bass & treble so he could be heard. I`ve no experience with EMGs from a user point of view, but whenever I`ve heard any of their pickups, be it on bass or guitar, I`ve always thought there was plenty of treble available - too much for me, in fact. Delberthot
I love the EMG 35HZ pickups. I put them in my Ibanez Doug Wimbish and favour them over the stock EMG P4 & J4 pickups that were originally in it. The one nearest the neck can get some nice thick, clear bass and the one nearest the bridge can get nice and honky but not nasal like a normal Jazz pickup. milosjanic52
I guess I will go with EMG then. STK-J1 is pretty hard to find here (Serbia), and ordering them would be too expensive. If you guys think there is a better pickup in this price range, please give a suggestion. That GFS is much cheaper, but I ll avoid it because it's not hum-canceling.
