aende
You missed my irony then... it was surprising to find bass in such a hopeless place as AJFA, where it had notoriously been lowered to inaudible levels in the mix.
Ah - I see! I think you can attribute all 'lost' bass to Andy Templemans productions of the mid 80's - circa Van Halen's 5150, which feature no bass at all in the mix! Elvis Valentine
A lot of these are not really unlikely good basslines though are they? Dragonforce, while not being my cup of tea are all freakin' amazing. Ben Folds 5 basslines are indeed awesome and therefore not really unlikely either imho. Im thinking more like these... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLVe1NkQA78 granted not virtuoso playing (and quite possibly played on a keyboard lol) but totally the hook of the song. or this... mcnach
Not so much the bassline as tone - a snippet of the 80's hit 'party fears 2' or whatever it was called came up on the radio this morning. I'd forgotten hown strongly the bass cuts through in that song and what a great tone it is (sounds very P bass to me but could have been something different) Edit : Now I've found it I realise it's actually a good bassline as well, forget the histrionic singing though!
not for me, I don't like the bass tone at all, too boomy and poorly defined. But I was probably predisposed to dislike it after hearing that voice... urgh!!!

Conan
Not really a "hopeless place" exactly, but maybe an unexpected place for such an interesting bass part? mcnach
I haven't played the youtube bit yet but. I'd have thought that would have required remixing or dubbing to get any bass audible. The bass was originally mixed so low I doubt remastering would be able to do much. Now Metallica own their back catalogue I hope they do remix it. Although I doubt it as it was James' and Lars' desicion to basically remove the bass.
click on "watch on youtube", it explains how it was done. Essentially, it's one of the tracks available as multitracks of some sort for a video game. From that, a guy isolated the bass track the best he could and mixed it together with the original album audio, ensuring the bass was loud enough in the mix.
That was kind of the point of the thread. Name the songs that have an excellent bassline where you wouldn't expect there to be. It's mainly focusing on genres away from rock (which is known for it's bassline wealth) and things more like pop, and stuff like that. People have listed music from cartoons and ads, which i think is great, because they really got the point of the thread (and so did you! Except you didn't realise it!). I was more or less using the popular Rihannah song to give the title an interesting twist. It also turns out that the song "We found love" actually has a hopeless baseline (in that it's pretty typical dance/pop music bassline, and fairly crap, and each note hidden behind i crummy sound). So that's all tied up in a neat little bow.
I love going on to YouTube and finding the bass master tracks, but the problem is, they are always terrible quality. Listen to any BSSM song, then find the bass master track on YouTube, and you would think they compressed the crap out of it and had it at a lower bit rate. I love the totally guttural sound of the Wal Mach 2 in BSSM, but on YouTube, it just sounds like a plank with an output socket.

But you'd be daft if you thought you weren't going to get some good bass playing listening to FGTH. 'Welcome to the pleasure dome' and 'Born to run' have brilliant basslines.
