Basslines That Dont Go Anywhere

I have been listening so some old 60's stuff today, and have come to the conclusion that some bass parts have been added as an afterthought. They don't go anywhere or add anything to the song and seem superfluous in some cases. These two spring to mind. I believe Sounds of Silence was originally an acoustic guitar and vocal number and the drums, bass and electric guitar were added later (without the knowledge of S&G incidentally), so that's not surprising.

We all hear it differently i suppose.
For me [apart from a great tune and hook] it was the superb arrangement and great playing all round.
