Linus27
I have a Squire Vintage Modified Fretless and it seems my tone control is doing nothing at all. Turn it full one way and and full the other and no difference in the tone at all. What would be the cause of this?? Easy fix or would something need replacing?? Thanks for any help. Stewart
Assuming it's passive, then the capacitor has gone open circuit (or become unsoldered)
Linus27
Yes its passive. So its something I can't fix myself then?? What would need replacing. Just the capacitor or more than that? Sorry not really electrically minded.
Stewart
Take off the plate and have a look - chances are there's just a wire come adrift (the cap is probably soldered directly onto the back of the tone pot).
Linus27
OK I took the plate off and all the wires were still intact. i gave them a wiggle and also this green thing which I am assuming is the capacitor. The tone seemed to work a little after that. So its either this green thing which is soldered to the pot or one of the wires.
Stewart
Yes - a dodgy soldered joint, for almost certain. Time to buy/borrow a soldering iron and some solder, and just 'freshen them up'. Dont forget to put at least some paper between the plate and the body, and it's easiest to get someone else to hold either the wire, iron or solder...
