I read the wikipedia entry, and now I'm wondering what post-hardcore and math-rock sound like :)

I must get out more... :D

Math-rock (horrible Americanism that it is) is usually pretty fast with odd time signatures and time changes. There's often a dollop of glitchy type dance stuff in there as well.

65daysofstatic are a classic example

Also Battles

I reckon these guys got into guitars after spending their teenage years lisening to lots and lots of dace music....

Math Rock tends to be really riffy, but the riffs are all in odd time signatures (or keep changing time signature) and fast tempos.

Some of its really good, but I find most of it to be too annoying to get into---everytime it sounds like they get into a groove it changes

Right! Have acquired a pair of earphones for my laptop, and from the suggestions posted, had a good listen to some of this 'ere 'Post-Rock'.
I enjoyed some of it, particularly Sigur Ros.
It did occur to me that I have been listening to very similar stuff to Post-Rock for many years. Some of it is not too dissimilar to a few tracks from Peter Gabriel's OVO album, particularly The Tower that Ate People, and maybe Low Light
A lot of his Passion album would also (IMO) fit the bill.
From what I've heard of Post-Rock so far, there's a certain movie soundtrack quality to much of it.
Thanks for the heads up.

Sounds like Red-era King Crimson
Y'know, early Crimson was my first thought.

I know I'm finding it hard to keep up with all these genres but 'dace music' sounds a bit fishy to me. ;)

It's not for everyone - probably because of all the scales....

Favourite Sigur Ros track: This has to be experienced live to get the full power of this track

And, especially for SteveK - post-rock from before post-rock even existed.

TheRev, Thanks for the Talk Talk link - I do actually have the Spirit of Eden album. I was a bit of a fan... until this album. Loved the previous two.
Guess this would now be known as Pre-Post-Rock

I'm liking this stuff. Some I've heard before. That Tortoise live set is Jazz. No other name for it. :)

Talking about other types of "post xxx" genres, I'll go for Manpat.

Post-hardcore is also a bit too wide to really mean anything, it generally means stuff that's quite fast and punky, but has a more melodic edge to it. There's the classic 90's stuff like Fugazi, Shellac, etc.:

Then there was a new wave of young bands in the early 2000's, Hundred Reasons, Hell is for Heroes, Reuben, Biffy Clyro, mclusky, loads of them. That stuff tended to be more metally, focussed around riffs and big choruses:

It probably already exists, unfortunately.

Post-rock!? Please save me from the ever expanding music genre explosion. Probably made up by some music journo. Heaven help us.

Simon Reynolds reviewing hex by bark psychosis in 94 I think.

I play with Those Amongst Us Are Wolves - see sig below and FB link for pics. We are billed as post rock, but gives us licence to really do whatever sits. Bass wise, not really many chances to 'sit in the pocket' - building patterns is how I think of it, and providing connective melodic tissue from the drums to the rest - we are guitar, keys, drums and bass.

Hi

Enjoying this thread, I have seen quite a few of these bands and I agree the term is a bit too broad to be helpful. A couple of other bands I've seen to add:

Slint, who allegedly released the first post-rock labelled album though they're more math-rock maybe. One of my favourite tracks:

And no one yet mentioned Rothko, who have 2 bass players:

There's also some good bands on the slightly heavier side of [s]post-rock[/s] instrumental rock.

Russian Circles (quite progressive music, with lots of loop pedal action done tastefully)

Pelican (riffs!)

They had three bass players, Mark Beazley, Crawford Blair, and Jon Meade.

Ohh, that's nice - I particularly like 'And so you thought "the sky's the limit"'. There's not enough use of the xylophone in rock music in my opinion.
