I lost my mojo somewhere in the 80's

I'm bald, fat , 52, currently in a good covers band, and I've been made aware that I can be quite capable of moving in a somewhat dated, "Dad dancing" style on stage............. Think 80's

Whilst trying to humor my rather younger band mates in their 20's and 30's. I've resorted to trying desperately not to look to "uncool" by remaining rather static. Now I'm looking "Bored" or uninvolved"

Any tips on how to remain cool looking in ones' latter years ?

I'm sure It's hard for them, playing in a band with someone old enough to be their dad. I know it's hard for me playing with a group of guys 20+ years younger than me.

And yes, I'm being quite serious here, I really need some help.

There's part of your problem right there! They're not called sunglasses!

Oh all right, shades then. :D Is that what young people in their 40s are calling them these days? :Dt

BTW I am actually older than our drummer's mother, but do I care? No I rather like it.

Men over 50 can be very cool - look at Brian Eno , David Bowie , Vidal Sassoon , Jeremy Clarkson ... well look at the first three of those anyway . It's all about how you present yourself . The first mistake people make is to try and look and/or act younger than they really are . Looking good when your older is not about fooling everybody your still 21 years old , it's about making the best of what you are . If you are up for trying to lose a bit of weight then that will always help and will probably take years off how you look and feel , but otherwise choosing the right outfit - something simple and flattering - and presenting yourself in the right way . Think of yourself as an elder statesman rather than as being too old to rock and roll . If the dad dancing is a problem then adopt a more static and serious stage persona . Just be stylish and understated in the way you dress and be yourself . And play the bass - that makes you cool all on its' own .

Big no to sunglasses (sorry, "shades") indoors - it always looks like someone trying hard to be cool. Trying to look cool is surest way to look uncool. Just relax and stop worrying about how you look. There, see, now you're cool :) .

I don't get that. I'm older than your drummer's mother too, but it leaves me cold.

Morsefull, I think you first and foremost need to be old and know it - without any form of excuse or embarrassment. Your strength and character will translate.

best,

One name to add to the lists above. Tony Levin.
Surely one of the coolest bass players on the planet, well over fifty and head like a billiard ball.

There's some good advice been given already and I would echo the losing weight tip. It doesn't look good at any age, and sheding some will guard against back trouble (the musician's curse). It worked for me.

Keep on rockin!

Len (54)

Wear one or more of the following:
a hat
a skull ring
sunglasses
a ZZ Top beard

Oh dear... I have two of those. Am I trying too hard.

Seriously though, age is no barrier if you and the rest of your band have the right attitude.

My band (the others are all in their 20s) respect me for my experience, my song writing skills, the fact that I'm not afraid to rock like a bastard. Also looking weird helps...
