It's a custom Conklin 7-string fretted/fretless double neck.

It belongs to John Turner who's one of the mods on TalkBass.

definately not my cup of tea either!! :)

if 'D.F.S.' ever made basses, this is what i'd imagine them to look like.........a little bit over-designed (IMO).

I quite like it but I'd never attempt to play it.

One day I will get one commissioned for actual use as a coffee table though. They look great!

The guys who play them must be seriously strong. That bass has to weigh around 3 times the weight of a standard 4-string.

John Turner is a very nice chap too. Helped me choose my Conklin 7 string way back when.

It's always nice to see the ERB bashing is alive and well :)

I think ERBs are cool. I'm not enough of a soloist or accompanist to use one properly.

But I think rather than get a Fender Stratocaster headstock-shaped coffee table, an actual bass guitar would be awesome. Garish, yes; babe-repellant, yes; but awesome nonetheless.

I'm not doubting that he's a nice guy, but if he'd spent a few grand on a really ostentatious hat I'd take the piss out of that, too. It just so happens that in this case it's a bass guitar.

Maybe it sounds nice, I don't know, I just don't like the look of it. I suppose when you pay for a bespoke guitar the chances are you're the only person who'll like the way it looks, unless you happen to have excellent taste.

I do think that's over the top, but conklin make some VERY nice extended range basses. Not many 5 strings though, which sucks. They do some really beautiful stuff, though as i say, that's a bit of an exception, though i guess he likes it.

I like the way it looks, but not enough to buy it.

I wouldn't play it live.

To me, that's the point in a doubleneck - live use so you don't have to switch.

I'd regard that as a work of art, but not something I'd pay Bill Conklin £5000 for.
whats the point? seriously, do you really NEED to change from fretted from fretless mid song?
There are a couple of songs I play with one of my bands in which I could do with jumping between fretted and fretless - the sections just work better on one or the other.

That said, I can't really see the point of having two necks of seven strings. I would have said that you had every eventuality covered in one bass, but this guy appears to have a million Conklins!!?

Either way, it looks absurdly great. More silly basses please!
