Stag
If you are looking for someone in the East of England, Pete @ Sonic Fix is a top chap to deal with for this kind of thing - lives in Horning (hoho!) out in the sticks about 10 miles from Norwich. Has a fully kitted out workshop, nice fella. Also did a cracking setup job on my Musicmaster. www.sonicfix.co.uk

I can't say about reliability yet but so far so good. Cheers Muppet.

4-string-thing
I've finally got round to having someone look at the Acoustic 120 I bought (non working) a couple of years ago. They've had it over a week and haven't even looked at it yet. So, does anyone know of a decent tech in or around Leicester? As this would only be a spare amp and cost peanuts, I don't want to travel too far or pay too much! Cheers, Mark. hallsteve62
Plus 2000. I took an Ampeg SVT IIP preamp to him yesterday for repair. I bought it from the states as they are quite rare in this country. After two weeks of it working, it started to make spluttering, static, popping noises. On the recommendations of various Basschatters I took it to Dave. Entering Daves workshop is an experience in itself, an American radio station was playing Blues in the background and a look around the subterranean workshop overwhelmed the senses with many beautiful vintage amps adorning its floor space. Get on with it! OK, the pre, after a lengthy examination was pretty tired, it was still producing a signal but the problem was a mix of dry solder joints, transformer repair, resistors and tubes replaced. So after a complete circuit test and three and a half hours of work, it was collected today and sounds ten times better than when I first got it. He has transformed it, it is the SVT sound that I was after and now it will be reliable after its complete rebuild. It was a bit of a trek for me but I don't think I will take this kind of equipment anywhere else after today.
I'd just like to post up a recommendation for Dave Lund too. I used him based on the advice given on this site and was 100% satisfied with the result.

jim_at
Thanks mate, but Guildford is a bit far out for me to get to! (am based in Bournemouth with no car) Theres a shop in Southampton imaginatively called The Guitar Store who outsource broken amps to their amp tech, unfortunutely I guess this means it makes it more expensive, they charge £60 just to look at the amp before anythings even done to it! So would rather go to someone direct. But I suppose I could pull some strings with friends and get over to Guildford if all else fails

Robots
I'm very surprised to see a negative comment about Gee Electronics! It's strange (suspicious?) because they are just not the type of place that would send you away unhappy... I've been to them more than once and they always do a fantastic job. The first time was with the first amp I ever bought. I got it from Micro Music on Smithdown Rd (which has now gone ). The speaker in it died so I called them asked them if they could fix it and they said no, but suggested Gee. I went there and they sorted it out for me quickly and cheaply. The most recent time was with my most recent amp, a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. It was the same service. It was done by a fella called Barry this time and he did it really quick and cheap, but the job they do is so good as well. You would never know that anyone had ever touched my amp. All the screws are in immaculate condition still, so it's just like it was when I took it in, only it now works I got to speak to John Gee himself and his knowledge about all this hardware is unbelievable. Whether it's guitars, microphones, amps, or even video cameras, he really knows his stuff and he is obviously really passionate about it too. For what it's worth, I double checked the quote they gave me with another amp repair guy and Gee's price was lower. So it's the cheapest, it's the best, and it's no surprise that they deal with pretty much every musicy place in the north west (and even people down south send stuff up to him apparently). The rehearsal rooms I play at (Crash), and the recording studio I've used (Elevator), all get their stuff done at Gee, and it's no surprise. I wouldn't go anywhere else. I'm lucky he is practically on my doorstep too. Edited August 4, 2010 by Robots
