Hi there,

I've recently purchased a Mk IV Sound City B120 - I've heard that there is a mod to quieten the active pre-amp and a general service to make sure everything is as it should be. Anyone had this done and if so, can you recommend where you had it done?

I'm based in Surrey/Hants and would preferably like to deliver the amp myself.

Thanks - Nick

Hi,

Am I allowed to advertise myself here? I'm an amp tech in Newark, most of my customers come from Nottingham, Lincoln, Loughborough, Derby etc.

I'm an electronic engineer and I do amp repair work part time (as of 2015), so I do sometimes have a waiting list, but I've worked on many bass amps and get good reviews, which can be seen on my facebook page.

Here are some links to bass amp repair jobs I've done - http://ampworks.co.uk/tag/bass-amp-repair/.
I do valve amps such as this ampeg repair
and solid state stuff like this laney repair

Hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this here, but hopefully I can help if you've got any issues!

Cheers

If you are anywhere in South/East Devon, Steve Rowse is now set up & running in Axminster. He's been mentioned before on here, but I thought a reminder would do no harm - just done a smashing job on checking/modding my Ormat pile, would totally recommend (and he's a bloody nice bloke).
Website - Steves Amps - take a look...........

Can anyone recommend a tech to work on a MarkBass LM2 ?

I've got problems with the volume/gain going up and down erratically. Not big-style, but it's a pain. My guess is there's a leaky capacitor. So I recon it's nowt too serious, but it takes a man with proper equipment to know for sure.

I'm in East Herts. So someone in Herts/ North London would be good.

Never used them myself, so not a personal recommendation, but - I use rehearsal rooms in Stevenage from time to time, and the guy who runs the place has all his repairs etc done by http://www.theampworkshop.co.uk/

That`s the guy that the luthier I use - tjcguitars - advised to use if any amp problems.

I've currently got a TE combo with Mal - really nice fella with years of experience repairing electricals. He repaired my niece's husbands TE guitar amp for a very reasonable price - I'll update this post when I collect the amp.

BTW I started a thread asking about Mal and this is what others had to say:

I took that amp to him and got it back "no fault found". He was honest about that. It turned out the over-heating was due to a bad amp lead making a poor connection.

Amp techs that are 'approved Trace Elliot' - whatever that means! - in Southend. They have always done a splendid job on mine. http://www.electronicmusicservices.co.uk/

The contact details for Dennis Marshall on Pp1 of this thread is out of date. He's now in Newmills, Dunfermline.

I can highly recommend him, he's an absolute guru on valve amps, all of the main brands (he lives & breathes Sound City) and is well worth the trip over the river.
I lived in Edinburgh for 24 years & never found anyone in his league.

Check out his client list, it speaks for itself.

Just an update. I spoke to Dennis this morning about my Ampeg SVT and he is no longer doing bass amps as they are a bit too heavy.
Shame as he seemed to be getting some great feedback on his work.

Any other recommended repair shops. I used Glasgow Studio Electronics to replace the 110V transformer with 230V and they did a great job but was just wondering who else is out there.

That's a shame but understandable. He has a lot of other gear related projects on the go too, and he's of an age where he wouldn't want to be shifting heavy amps about.
You weren't by any chance the punter in Live Music Edinburgh asking about getting an Ampeg looked at about a month ago were you?

Another heads up for Dave Lunt Stockport. He's just fixed my poorly Ashdown Abm rackmount bass head. Turned it round in less than 24 hours.
When I went to collect the amp he fixed my SGC Nanyo bass collection active circuit board whilst I waited. I can't sing his praises enough he's my go to
Amp and guitar tech. B)

After doing a very reasonably priced service on my TE GP7215 last year (see above) I had Mal Crawley service the electronics in my Spector this week - a couple of loose wires later it sounds clean as a whistle.

Another recommendation for Dave Ball in Nottingham. Got rid of a buzz on my TE SMX that had been there forever and also gave my other TE head (later Peavey era) a good going over (dry joints etc).

North West Kent: another recommendation for Dave Tutt in Chatham. 24 hour turnaround, superbly priced and the work is outstanding!

No afraid not. I went to Glasgow Studio Electronics and he found some dodgy plugs and few solder joints.

Anyone know any Aguilar repair guys about?

bump for that. My db750 gets outrageously hot after a gig and would benefit from some inspection. I did use Brian Bond, based in Camden, a few years back but he takes forever and I'm not convinced he's the best guy for the job.

Rowan at Keld Ampworks just fixed my EBS Head - the bass tone control was faulty. He did it on the spot while I waited. Very thorough and a great depth of knowledge
