Average White Band ?

Just saying .....
Absolutely. When they came down to London they played the Greyhound, Fulham Palace Road (before they had a record deal) regularly and were so tight as a band. They were just so good i think we all knew we weren't going to see them in pubs for long. Fabulous band!!!

great stuff.. !!... have only seen incognito live out of all of those.. great to see someone with so much knowledge about these bands.. they get forgotten sometimes.. rod temperton in my eyes is real master of soul music..
I'd love to say it was knowledge but it's really a case of me being really old!!!

I think the Rod Temperton story is amazing and i'm glad that although Heatwave went through a period of being a bit ignored now seem to get the plaudits they deserve as a band.

Ah, read the question Tone.

Have a go with Hatfield And The North. I find (for example) Soft Machine a bit too barmy. Hatfield are post-Caravan whimsy-prog, but just onside from the madness of Soft Machine. (Having said that, SM in their very recent years before Hugh Hopper died were brilliant). Check out all four Hatfield albums - try the original Eponymous and The Rotters Club first, then more recent archive releases Hatwise Choice: Archive Recordings 1973-1975, Volume 1 and Hattitude: Archive Recordings 1973-1975, Volume 2. Here's "Going Up To People And Tinkling"
Ah... the Greyhound! Played there many times through the 70s, Mostly playing pop/rock... although, IIRC the last time I played there (about '78) we had changed direction and changed the band name - playing a kind of fusion, but probably better described as Prog. Good times.

Always thought it was a good place to watch a band. What was the name of your group? I may have seen you there.

The pop/rock band played the Greyhound from about '73 to '77 and was called 'Factory', then about '78 we changed drummer, changed musical direction and changed name to 'Head On'.
Factory were a 'nearly' band, we always seemed to be 'nearly' signing the big record deal, 'nearly' doing the big tour. Of course, it never quite happened. Great bunch of guys and great musicians.
We were gigging 2 or 3 nights a week all over the UK and Europe. It invariably cost us more to do the gigs than we were paid, so always skint!.. but, I wouldn't change a thing.
As I said, 'Good times' :)

Great stuff!
There were so many good bands to watch in London pubs around that time. We were really spoilt as punters. I still think that one of the most polished bands was Bees Make Honey. I suppose they had very little commercial potential so never made it in the big time.

Dr Feelgood, Ducks Deluxe, Meal Ticket, Roogalator, Eddie and the Hotrods, Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers, 101ers, Stranglers, Lew Lewis, Eggs Over Easy, Average White Band, Kilburn and the High Roads, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Racing Cars, Tyla Gang, Graham Parker, Chas and Dave, Kokomo, Moon, Kursall Flyers. You could see them all for about 50p!

Great bands and as you say good times.

Morresy Mullen from the 80's.....
More of a Latin Fusion Band, but PAZ were a good band [I believe they started in the mid 70's]
Late 70's early 80's there was also a band called Savanna, started out as Fusion but ended up down the Disco route.
Our very own Joe Hubbards 'Hubbards Cupboard'

Richard Niles had a band called 'Bandzilla' back in the 80's - TV house band on the Ruby Wax show.
Full of top players.

Those were the days. Cruising around in my Escort RS2000, windows down, holding the roof on with Los Conquistadores Chocolates blaring out of the stereo!!!

This has been a really good thread. It's hard to imagine how fusion was loathed by many older Jazz fans at the time and musicians were accused 'selling out' by playing it. Miles, Herbie Hancock etc were not liked by a lot of the jazz fraternity and don't mention when Freddie Hubbard and the likes wheeled out their electric trumpets!

Crikey, i just found this - Miles Davis - The Cellar Door Sessions 1970...
I realise they were re-issued a couple of years ago, but I've only just discovered them being new to this sort of thing and all that (I only got Live Evil last week).
They sound like the Holy Grail, I've just ordered them...!

Even Herb Albert climbed aboard, sold out and went smooth in a Mexican way..................
Louis Johnson saves the day, or at least stopping it from making number one in the Tower Ballroom Blackpool.

With the great Michael Henderson..................wonderful stuff!!!!!!

All of this period Miles is worth a listen and On The Corner from 1972 is the most funky.
