Years ago, I thought that guitar- followed closely by keyboards would be ideal.

With metal it's always guitar first IMHO .
However, maybe due to age , I wanna be a drummer with a nice kit.
Ain't gonna happen,so i will stick to recording bots on soundcloud and the like ,)

Singing.

Since my voice broke, my singing has sounded like the red dalek and I have a range of less than 1 octave. I'd pretty much give anything to have a decent singing voice and range.

Anything I have desperately wanted to play, generally i can to a degree.
Would love to be virtuosic on a Piano (no time to practice, so more of a Neil young style thumper on it) and am incapable of playing anything you have to blow due to 20-something years of smoking.
So I voted higher pitched brass, as I am terribly jealous of our trumpet player.

Nice thread Nige!

Double bass for me. It's been my favourite instrument for as long as I can remember. I just love the sound of an upright. One day I'll hopefully learn how to play one myself...

I'm happy playing bass fullstop, there is nothing else I want to do, I can lay guitar but I don't want to, it doesn't excite me at all.

I just wish I could song write a whole lot better.

I would very much like to be able to play Piano (jazz and classical, please) and Drums (all styles).

Sadly I don't seem to have the ability to play the "multi-tasking" instruments all that well and am more suited to single-note instruments like the flute or the bass.

there's not really an option there that i wouldn't like to have a go at but i voted singing, i play guitar as well but the abilty to stand up and sing in front of an audience would be ace, i did it twice, solo, accapella, in front of a whole school and i've not had the guts to try again (i didn't want to sing but i had no real choice)

I'm pretty happy just being a bassist to be honest, although I wish I could play drums - not got the coordination for it, and I'm trying to improve my singing at the moment those would always take 2nd place

I'm not envious of other players, but I have a slight envy of the guys that can just grab a piece of manuscript paper and write out full arrangements as
though it's nothing. I can write and arrange but nowhere near like that.

I don't envy anybody, such a waste of emotion. I would love to be able to play the organ (inc foot pedals) though.

Keyboards for me - especially after seeing Rod Argent play. Pulls off some amazing lines and makes it look so damn easy. Whereas every time I sit down at a keyboard I hunch over it with a maniacal look of glee in my eyes before hammering out the melody to Feed the World.

:D

I have just started trying to learn to play keys a little. Tommy Mars is greatly inspiring me, and I'm making a little progress with Gymnopedie 1

Please take the 'envy' in this thread in a lighthearted way. Thanks :)

I think we should all envy anyone who can play with their organ in public and get away with it.

Great choice!
Here's lesson 1, from an organist and pedant twat: It's called "pedals". No hand pedals exist. :)

Me, I was inspired by the Jaws Harp option ( :) ), but voted Drummers, as drums are the complete alternative to bass and keyboards.
Have started learning a little, for the time being on Derbouka and Djembe, and the moment I feel I practise enough on bass, I'll buy an electronic drum kit and find a drum teacher.

best,

I've always wished desperately that I could sing. If I could hand over whatever skills I have with all the instruments I play, including Bass, and be handed the skill to just hold a tune, I would do it in a heart beat.

Actually, I'm not quite so sure anymore. Over the last four years I have come to terms with it. But still, if I could swap for the skills to be a brilliant singer, rather than just holding a tune, I'd go for it.

Classical anything, especially piano, would give me all the music reading and theory I would be a much better musician with but can't really be bothered to learn properly. All the notes just laid out there, be good for writing.

Sitar for me. Unfortunately I suspect I don't have enough years left to learn to play and I'm not sure that I have the mindset required to play the ragas that I love listening to.

Other than that, I play too many instruments to varying degrees of incompetence as it is.
