Mixing Competition/Learning Resource - February POLL ADDED

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Right, here we go, February's competition will be mixing Butlerk02's band's rather excellent track Mission Ray.

I expect we will have a whole different set of issues with this one, but the approach and ground rules are the same, mix it to sound the best you can make it sound as a production, enjoy every minute of it and expect to disclose exactly how you made it work at the end of the month after the poll is done.

Butlerk02 will stick the link to the stems in here as soon as he's sorted it out.

Good luck to everyone!

Here are the links to the final mixes for easy access:-

Remember this is about the mix not anything to do with mastering, so final level isirrelevant, its all about the sound of the production.

I'm just getting to work with the song, using aux sends and a fair amount of insert fx - my quad core is at 25 - 30% and taking around 500meg of RAM.

I'm guessing that dual core or above should manage.

Cheers Keith. Wow... 33 stems... That's an altogether different kind of challenge. I only hope my 'puter is up to it!

I'll have a crack at loading them up this weekend and testing the water, so to speak.

[s]Any chance of a copy of the original track in the meantime? Be useful to hear as a reference.[/s] Just found it on SoundCloud! :D Here's the link for anyone else who wants a listen:

Cheers lads.

If your computer power is struggling, then I know that in logic you can freeze the track once you are done with it. It will then stop eating up your CPU. Not sure if this option is available in other DAWs though.

Old G - the drums were recorded in a very large empty room, using not very good Mic technique. I'm happy for anyone to use samples if you want/need to.

It also might not be a good idea to listen to the album version as it may sway your opinion of what it sounds like - but I'll leave that with you.

Cheers
Keith

33 stems is not that many chaps :)

Get sections about right then render them and move on. Eventually all the groups are rendered and you can go back and tweak each group until it's right.

Takes ages but it is possible...

Im getting pretty near to finishing my mix, only through headphones so it might sound a bit turd. Is anyone else getting a mate to master it or anything? mastering it themselves? dont worry keith I wont get greg to master it!

OK then , I have had a go , I think I am at my limit , so I put up what I've done , I think it is an improvement on last months entry, and I have a few kind people to thank for pointing me in the right direction, whether I followed any of it however is for you to judge.
I noticed the headphones comment earlier , headphones is all I have at the moment so that is my monitoring method, I guess that proper studio monitors are the way to go , but one step at a time :D

Havent even had a listen to the stems yet - been super busy :(

Lurks, you can do a good mix on headphones, but there are a load of gotchas to watch out for, the low end and high end can be difficult, and reverb times and delay feedback can be really hard to get right. Panning is hard to judge on cans too (tendency is to spread everything too little). But for really homing in on mid range eq and transient detail (so for shaping stuff around the vocal, and getting compresison and gates set up right) headphones can be excellent, far better than cheap monitors in a pants room...

Just had a listen to your mix Lurks. The separation of the instruments is definitely better than your previous mix and they have more space. The one thing you might have too much of in this track is reverb. By adding the amount of reverb you have you are pushing the instruments and vocal really far back in the mix.

I too can only mix using headphones, but you can put your mix through any stereo and see if anything pops out as being problematic.

Thanks guys , If I can put a bit more time on it I will , I am still working my way around the software and there a few things that I have got to get my head around , but its all good fun .

Hi. Thought I'd give this a go and have really enjoyed it, so thanks to those organising it!
Gave me chance to try some new ideas I'd heard about a try. Only listened to the original after finishing my mix though, and now feel slightly inadequate! Nevertheless, 'ere it is:

Cheers Garry, an interesting read! Had made me re-think my obsession with high sampling rates ;-)

Does give you something to think about, although i kinda just stayed with 44/24,
Or for DVD work 48/24 [or48/16] so my puter didn't explode..... :)

Good luck with this months mix up - lordy lordy, all those tracks....

44/24 here too.... though I'll go to 48/24 for smaller projects.

Thought I'd share a great bass vst I came across while working on this project....

.

works better for me than all the free amp sims I've tried on it :)

Powerful sounding mix there.. Are you slamming it with a limiter,by any chance?
