Good to hear the image is sparking a few ideas!

I tried to pick a picture that offered potential for lots of different interpretations, as I'm conscious that previous pics I've chosen have been more literal and one dimensional. And I wanted to encourage as many people as possible to have a go this month.

I kicked around some ideas for it myself over the weekend and settled on something a bit quirky - and frankly, quite difficult to actually play! (for me anyway). Still, it's given me reason to get some practice in on the bass. Should be fun :)
...I now have to rapidly learn how to play some piano to do this :D
Good stuff Nige. I've learn a bit of guitar playing as a result of these challenges, although I still tend to draw piano and synth lines by hand. I need to practice more...!

PS: did you end up getting yourself a keyboard? I use an M-Audio Oxygen, a great little k'board for playing around with synths, etc, but I must admit I quickly run out of keys whenever I try to play anything on it!

This challenge is really good for giving one a push to get to grips with new instruments.

Your little Oxy is lovely! But I need more keys that that. Diane got me a Novation Impulse 49 controller for Christmas, it's brilliant! The keys are semi weighted and have a decent feel to them. Although I kinda wish I'd have gone for the 61 key version, but the 49 is fine really. I also replacedReaper with Logic 9, simply because the sounds that come with it are amazing and legion. I suppose I could have saved over a ton by just getting Mainstage, but I felt I needed to learn Logic. By god it's complex!

Niiice... those Novation Impulse's are meant to be great. Very good choice of prezzie by Lady Silddx. 49 keys should be plenty mate, although I know what you mean - I only have a piddly 25!! A classic case of pianist envy (boom, boom)

I've been tempted by Logic myself, especially at the current price tag. Amazing value for money. I've invested too much time in using Reason (my regular DAW) to jump ship, it'd be like turfing out an old friend, or something. But yeah, you can't go wrong with Logic. In fact there's a (crap) old joke about 'atheist producers' using Logic and Reason. T-shirt available here if you so choose ;)

Some good gags in there mate :D

My friend and bandmate is a senior music tech lecturer and he reckons one of the main reasons for studios using Logic and Protools is that they render very accurately. I hadn't even considered this might be an issue.

I'm liking this month's pic & have started something already. Might try & lay a bassline down one day this week (but more likely to be the following).

Just had a look at Logic 9 & it's massively cheaper than the last time I looked!
Does it still come with the VSTis?

I would be surprised if that is true.....EDIT...got me curious though, and waste an hour trawling da net...
Pro Tools has been around for years and became standard if used with HD.
In mainland Europe, Nuendo and Samplitude/Sequola [along with Pro Tools] are used a lot for broadcast and Post production.
Logic and Digital Performer, with Nuendo/Cubase are certanly used a lot for film/TV scoring because of the Video cue support and notation,
along with the in depth MIDI side of it, when dealing with Orchestral articulations from the big Kontakt and similar libraries. [needed for mock ups]

For MIDI composing these days, the problem with Pro Tools, is it not being x64 bit limits RAM usage to 4 gig, if that.
But in reality any DAW is capable of getting things done [with impressive results] It's what the user does with it, and
adopts to work arounds for any limitations.

Nice one. Sounds like you're way ahead of the game this month mate... I've got the bare bones of something sketched out and lots of practice ahead to get it laid down!

Annoyingly I've become quite obsessed with my new tune... it's a catchy little bugger, I just hope I can get it into a listenable state by the end of the month... it's danger of having new (Omnisphere) synths to explore as well - just too much fun... anyway I'll keep you posted
