The Dark Lord
I'm changing all my gear to be small - but effective. I'm now looking for a monitor to replace my front of stage wedge. I presently have a powered Laney CXP110. I need smaller, higher quality, and just as powerful. Anyone got any ideas. Price isn't really a factor. The Dark Lord
I'm wondering about a Bose L1 Compact? Still using the PA, but using that as a monitor.

brensabre79
Behringer, Thomann, Mackie all do small (6-8") powered speakers for on stage monitoring. They go on a mic stand. Great for vocals. We use the Thomann one, it was under £100 and its not bad! It has two speakers in it. A bit hissy but it works really well, replacing two powered wedges. Happy Jack
http://www.djkit.com/wharfedale/wharfedale-wpm-1-150watt-powered-monitor-.html?gclid=CJCKus7robUCFQSf4AodI2cASw Doesn't matter whether or not you sing. Goes on the lower pole of a normal mic-stand, accepts mic input + instrument input + line input (from PA). Small, lightweight, very effective. 6v6
You say price is not much of an issue, so my suggestion is the QSC K8 http://www.qscaudio.com/products/speakers/k_series/K_series_K8.php These get great reviews and are really powerful. Alternatively at the smaller/cheaper end of the scale, check out the Mackie SRM150, we use one of these for the singer's foldback with two SRM450s out front and it works well provided the stage volume is fairly sensible. bobpalt
Behringer B205D. £127 from Thomann (£145 over here is the best price I have seen). Cant criticize mine one bit, sits on a mike stand right at ear level and sounds epic. One of the best pieces of kit I have ever bought. [/quote] Funny you should say that, I've just bought one of those there Behringer B205D things yesterday. I was gonna get a Mackie SRM150 until I realised that the Behringer B205D was more or less identical. I ran an A/B test yesterday with my present monitor (which I have realised is actually a CXP112 .... not the CXP110) ..... and I gotta say that I get more or less the same amount of volume outa both. Yes, the bigger speaker gave better bass, but I only need the monitor to be able to hear the vocals, so bass response isn't such a big deal. Have you used yours at a live gig yet? I haven't but I will do soon.

I genuinely think its one of the best things I have ever bought for live use, and so much more convenient than the floor monitor I used before. BobVbass
I use the srm 150 - excellent piece of kit, sits on a mic stand, loud as my old powered wedge - very impressed - also seems very feedback resistant Edited February 18, 2013 by bob_pickard
Len_derby
I've bought a Behringer B205D on the strength of what was said in this thread. I'd endorse all the good things said above. My only criticism so far is that it doesn't look or feel amazingly study and might not survive much of a drop. But, at the price, that's not a major quibble. It fits perfectly in a dodgy fake Nike holdhall I got from Egypt too. Thanks for the heads-up Basschatters! The Dark Lord
Yep. I've used mine for half a dozen gigs now. Brilliant. Much better than lugging a massive wedge about. Does the job just fine. Love it.
gafbass02
Ive been using a B205 on a mic stand for several months now, it's been great, no lack of power and easy to move around. I'll add a second at some point and use them for those small vocal pa moments.
redbandit599
Hi, we might be adding a couple of additional monitors to our pa rig. Have any of you using the Behringer 205D run anything more than just vocals through them? Do they stand up to a bit of guitar and kick drum for instance? Cheers
The Dark Lord
We used two last night. We only put vocals through them. We did use them for full monitoring once (bass, guitar, kick and vocals) and we found they farted out a bit. We had to back off the bass and volume to stop that ..... and then we couldn't hear them as much as we wanted ..... nearly, but it was marginal. redbandit599
Thanks, I did wonder if that might be the case. Might be stuck with more wedges then.

The previous Tourmax with the separate horns were good. I tried these out very quickly at PMT in Bristol just by plugging my iPod in but wasn't impressed with the sound. Without trying a mic through them it was hard to assess how they would perform in a live situation to be fair.
deepbass5
Yes i have three of them, used for vocal only fold back in a four piece functions band. I have also used them for small PA. mine are the 10" 350 watt and paid £75 -£100 more at the time, these 12" would be even better and are now only £250 I did A -B the 8" 10" and 12" at the time. with mic only in a shop 1,2,1,2,1,2, etc the 8" were limited and sounded thin. I did'nt get the 12" as they were £400 then. They were overpriced and think they have been re launched at this price as i have not seen 8" and 10" advertised since. Proel were the agent who imported them here at first, and think they still are. My only gripe is the paint finish which is too hard and knocks off mine have worn thin on the corners so have had the hammerite out on them. funkle
Anyone tried the RCF HD-10A? They look to be pretty impressive on paper anyway. I need to go and give the QSC K10 and K8 a go too.
