Which bass amp for Double bass and Bass guitar

Recommended Posts

I recently sold my heavy Ashdown bass amp and am looking at either the Genz Benz CTR 500-115 at about £490 or the Gallien and Krueger MB210-II at £470. The GB is a bit heavier. Any advice on these combos or others in the same price range. I mainly play double bass, but will probably do the odd gig with my Precision.

Any expert experience would be welcome.

I'm strictly an electric player, but for what it's worth ...

Gallien Krueger MB150E / MB150S

Beefed up with the MBX112 ext extension cab the 150w is surprisingly loud, clear, and present. You can read something of how this is acheived in the review below. These are great for recording too, the signal path is uber clean. I use it for everything .. practices, gigs, recording. Don't be put off by thinking that because it's small that it miht be gutless. It's not. I've used it with a fairly loud drummer and no pa very successfully in small to medium sized rooms. Any gig that will require anything bigger is bound to have pa support anyway. Many double bassists swear by these. there's a few big name endorsers too (I think).

Such high quality gear. So light, versatile, and clean sounding.

Peavey Tour 700 - dirt cheap 2nd hand, graphic equalizer - Double bass through the Barefaced Dubster is an experience to behold :) possibly I am lucky my db seems very feedback resistant.

I have doubled on lots of different amps. I use an fdeck preamp in front of whatever amp for the DB and that makes everything easy.

I would love to try a dubster with my DB. That would be lush beyond!

+1 for the Walkabout- I use the head with a Berg EX112ER. The semi-para EQ's great for taming unwanted sub-bass rumble and dealing with nasty room resonances...

Would love to get my hands on the Fdeck HPF though- looks like an essential bit of kit for cleaning up the signal from my Bassmax...

I double with a MarkBass CMP121P combo & 1x12 cab & I get plenty of compliments on my sound even if not my playing.

The E has on-board effects.
