ead
Not sure if this thread should be here or in the repairs and technical. On balance I think here. Anyway, does anybody have experience of basses with a Precision / Humbucker pickup combination. If so any observations etc would be of interest. Thanks
iiipopes
It's no different than a P/J combination a J/MM combination, or an EMG soapbar (or comparable) combination, or even any other two pickup configuration. Even Fender has had on and off through the last twenty or so years a variant with a double-wide Jazz-bass derived double coil pickup at the bridge. A bridge double-wide humbucker can be split and series/parallelled wired. It expands the tonal palette. The pickups used and their positioning will affect details of the overall tone, but will not change the fundamental characteristic of the instrument. It will still be a P with some added tone coloring. ead
I have a P/J, a J/J and an H/H and once owned an J/MM and to my ears they are all distinctively different. I can imagine that a P/H might be pretty similar to an H/H, and I wonder if that is the reason that there appear to be proportionally less of them about. EssentialTension
I had a Precision with a double J humbucker at the bridge. I sold it because I was only ever using the P pickup.
John Schoen
The Yamaha Attitude LTD has a P pickup in the regular position and a humbucker near the neck. I love this combination, it gives real thumping lows witout becoming too muddy.
