Rumple
Apologies if this topic has been covered somewhere else on the forum but I couldn't find anything specific. Recently I have grown to love the sound of the half rounds that I've put on my SR5, although I'm not that taken on the B string of the Status Hot Wires which seems disproportionately dull, anyway I thought I'd put a different brand on to my Overwater which is 35" scale but the D'Addario XL's that were delivered today are too short, the taper on the string starts before the nut So does anyone use half rounds on a 35" scale bass and if so what brand and what do you think of them? Happy Jack
Not sure about half-rounds, but I recently put a set of Lakland flats (the Joe Osborn medium strings) on my Mike Lull and they're gorgeous. They're noticeably more 'edgy' than the La Bella FLs I normally use (and continue to use on vintage Precisions) so they're not as inherently dull as most flats that I've tried. Rumple
Hi Jack, That's definitely the sound I like, not as bright and clanging as rounds but not the full on dull thud of flats. Where did you pick those up from?
discreet
If I could jump in annoyingly, here... I get mine from Lakland: http://www.lakland.c...gory_Code=4STRS But it looks like the Mediums are out of stock. Lakland strings are made by GHS, and their Precision Flats are very similar indeed: http://www.ghsstring...ecision-flats-1 HTH Edit: But of course, Jack may have a secret supplier I know nothing about! Rumple
Funnily I've just been on their site and noticed they were out of stock, I'll have a look at GHS.
Rumple
I've just noticed the D'Addario's I bought are 'long scale' but they do a 'super long scale', grrr... I've obviously purchased the wrong ones
discreet
These might do you... GHS Precision Flats for 35" (Long Scale Plus). They are indistinguishable from the Laklands (apart from the silk colour). I've bought many strings sets from the US, you don't have to pay duty, etc. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2c6bf7dd7b Edited February 9, 2013 by discreet
Rumple
Ordered the right D'Addario's this time, I might give the GHS/Lakland flats a go at some point though as they sound interesting. Thanks both of you.
fretmeister
The GHS Pressure wounds are superb! Thick and thuddy with the bass tone turned down, but enough grit and presence with it up. I think they come in an Extra Long Scale option for 35inch scale.
hubrad
I use Picato 766LHR-5 on a 35" scale Overwater.. just fit nicely! We sell them in the shop (I make sure of that!) but I notice only the 4-string set is on the website. We have the 5ers in anyway.
