Is the global recession producing any good new music?

Usually, the sh*t times generate some new music, new bands rattling on about how sh*t the world is, hippie folkies telling us to cheer up, deth metallers saying old Nick told 'em this would happen ages ago, etc.

Has the global recession produced any good bands you know about?

I'm not a big fan of Plan B, but I did quite like his track Ill Manors (link here of it live on Jules), which I thought was one of the more politicised chart songs of last year.

Some interesting lyrics anyway ;)

Not that I'm aware of, there's a lot of young indie bands doing the faux working class schtick, which is at best annoying, and at worst insulting and patronizing.

Oh gyod, yeah I hate that. I hate the class system and class-based us-and-them music usually pisses me off.

Oh and PS: the underground rave/warehouse scene seems to be starting up again; at least it is in the north west. Not on the same scale as during Thatcher's reign, but good to see nonetheless :) (<that smilie is particularly apt).

Not quite John Cooper Clark, but not bad.

Not that I know of, although I've been outside the more politically charged hardcore punk scene for a year or so.

I have a feeling all of this negativity will have an affect on upcoming bands.

I was thinking the other day that music prospers in hard times.

Yeah, I think he wanted to get something off his chest by the sound of it! I was amazed it got such widespread airplay at the time (peaked at no. 6 in the chart according to Wiki).

This is definitely worth a read then:

And this one probably makes a better point, but is less entertaining:

They're from my hometown. I'm not any more ;)

I had a listen, the reviewers were right, dreadful rubbish.

The irony being that it's often middle-class performing-arts school graduates trying to seem raw and edgy, and ending up with a middle-class audience who are also trying to seem raw and edgy...
