slaphappygarry
MXL 603s. http://www.thomann.de/gb/mxl_603s.htm?partner_id=59917 Some reviews suggest it is super bright... The 604s has a pad switch which would be helpful but i dont think they come on their own. opinions would be great. G
slaphappygarry
Anyone? Anyone recomend anything similar?
Steve_K
I've not used that model specifically, but I wasn't overly impressed by the MXLs at the time. Unfortunately, that was several years ago so I can't remember the model - sorry! What are you (recording?) with it, I was trying to use them with a choir but got better results with a generous scattering of SM58s and Sennheiser E835/845s? slaphappygarry
Nothing specific. Just a small x/y pair really. The first application will be a clarsach (scottish harp) but in future will be used for room mics, acoustic guitars, percussion etc etc.... Just want something small, cheap (ish) and reliable that sounds good. G
dr.funk
The SE1A is in a similar price range and got a good review from SOS. Or maybe the Samson C02 which is about that price for a pair?
slaphappygarry
the c02 isn't what i am after... the great thing about the MXL's is that, with 604, you get a second diaphragm which is omni pattern. And it has the -10db roll off. I will look further into the SE though.... G
alexclaber
The Rode NT4 looks particularly fine, though not sure if that's within budget. I have a pair of C1000s but they're not the sweetest sounding mics. We used some tiny cheap Samsons as XY overheads for a our recent recording and I was impressed with them. slaphappygarry
The Nt4 is not what i am after. Although i am after a pair i may from time to time wanna use them seperatly. Ill look closer into the c02. I have never really used the samson mics but there is something about them that seems a little cheap. edit: £64 quid a pair?! No, i don't think these are gonna sound that great or last....
ZPQ
I've got an AKG 451 which is sweet, (I combine it with a c414). For live work (i.e. where I don't want things to go missing) I use either a pair of Beyer opus53's (a bargain from thomann) or the Joe Meek JM27 (from Gear4music) They are both really good sounding SDC's without breaking the bank. The SE1a would be also be good buy (studiospares has them cheapest I think), and for more critical work I'm sure you can buy a matched pair. dr.funk
I will look further into the SE though.... G
One of the models has different capsules you can fit, think its the SE3, the review in SOS mentioned they fitted the SE2 mic so by buying an SE2 and SE3 you could get 2 cardoid and one omni. slaphappygarry
Cool, Cheers everyone. Its between the MXL 604's, SE 2a's or Rode NT5's. Wicked. G

You can hear them contributing the bulk of the drum sound on my recording thread. If I could do it again I'd probably buy a matched pair of AKG 414s or something like that instead of pair of C1000s for overheads and a JM47 for vocals. slaphappygarry
I really like C1000's as over heads. They, to my ears, sound alot mroe direct. 414's are still the daddies though.... Alas, what i wouldnt give for a tonne of cash... G
