BigLicks67 Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 My birthday is coming soon, so I was thinking of getting this book: Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson (book and CD) Anyone got it and if so is it accurate/any good etc? Many thanks in advance for your replies. Quote
Roland Rock Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I had that book, and thought it was great. A nice mixture of information and music, and overall a lovely tribute to Jamerson by many great bass players. If I remember correctly, it doesn't contain tab, so if you don't read music, this is good motivation to learn! Quote
Bilbo Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 It's brilliant. Great material for reading practice. It is very accurate but the parts are not complete so you will often get an intro, verse and chorus and then a fade or even just a riff here and there but, overall, a really useful resource and it gives you massive insight into JJ's style. Highly recommended (and I 'kin hate Motown ) Quote
yepmop Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 yep a really good read filled with some good info. the only thing i didn't like was the size of the book would have been better if it was a bit more compact but that's me being a fussy old git :-) Quote
BigLicks67 Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 I prefer music to TAB, so that's not a problem. I'll get this on my Birthday List, thanks for the replies. Quote
lowdowner Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 i'm sure i have this on DVD though... brilliant Quote
ML94 Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Yeah this book is amazing. You get the CD play along which has panned bass track which is a bonus for guys like me who can't read rhythms ! Love the DVD Quote

bluesparky Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 I've got it too, it was recommend to me by someone else on here about 15 years ago. It's outstanding, great fun to play. Quote
geoffbassist Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Superb book. My favourite for bass guitar. Quote
bartelby Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 I've had that book for many years. It came with 2, long gone, tapes when I bought it. Haven't looked at it for years though. May drag it out this evening... Quote
Westie9 Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 I've got it and use it every now and again to sharpen my reading. Quote
2wheeler Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Great book. If you compare the star recordings to Jamerson's originals you will appreciate the enormity of Jamerson's genius. Quote
paul_5 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Yup, been in and out of that book for years. Great for reading practice, study pieces and wonderful anecdotes. Every home should have one! Quote
